Well to be fair here, Secondary air injection systems have been proven to reduce emissions by up to 50%. Do I agree with the design especially with how shittily designed it is? Hell no, BUT I understand the necessary evil there is in place to make Toyota feel compelled enough to run them in place.

CAFE, ARB, and especially CARB is looking for any excuse to tell them that their engines are too dirty to run these trucks on public roads and they are legally not allowed to sell them given how much fuel they consume even with the SAI system in place.

Secondary air injection systems are considered an emissions exclusive item. That is it's sole and primary purpose.

ALL emissions items down to the catalytic converters are covered under an 8 year 80,000 mile warranty under federal law.

If the SAI system is failing, they are legally not allowed to deny you of warranty repairs and if they do or attempt to, a nice conversation with service manager or even the general manager of the dealership attempting to deny you would QUICKLY lay down the red carpet for you the moment you tell them such, and if they don't, the hot water they'll get in will be scalding hot.

    It won't help.

I also installed the Hewitt tech bypass as a preventative measure. I installed it a few years ago and wasn’t experiencing any issues when I put it on but I bought this truck for it’s reliability and I’m not chancing going into limp mode when I could be hundreds of miles from home.

At the time there wasn’t a solution for an all out delete and the HT bypass kit was easy enough to install. I haven’t noticed any problems with it or the sais system. I believe HT now has a second gen bypass kit that is even easier to install and for a couple hundred bucks it was a no brainer for my peace of mind, especially after hear some guys are getting charged over $1500 for the dealership fix.

Given the price difference between the OEM fix and the bypass kit, I’m surprised not to hear more guys fitting the HT kit. I haven’t read any bad experiences with it.

Blur, Have you been denied any service work from any source dealership or private mechanic shops? since the HT was installed
or do you perform all your maintenance yourself?

That's a damn good question, I even took it to corporate. Toyota made good on it a few years later when they issued the recall of them for the 2012 trucks and I submitted my receipts and they sent me a check reimbursement of parts only, not my time to install.

Both dealership and corporate would not cover, they even tried to charge me a $100 diagnostic fee when I took it in at 51k. I fought that and they waved it and sent me on my way. I tried the emissions route and no dice. At that point I had to just bite the bullet and fix myself to get the truck going, missing work for to the truck down and aggravation over battling was not with it anymore to me. Toyota has always fought me tooth and nail when something needed repair under warranty.

At 29k one of the valves was got frozen in the stuck closed position. So I had codes but no link mode. At 51k they both failed completely stuck open position and left my wife and daughter stuck in limp mode with the truck, I was not happy.

If any of you have taken the valves apart they are destined to fail, the valves are surrounded by rubber to help them seal up. The rubber degrades and causes them to stick open and screw up.

I haven’t been denied any service work because I have done everything myself (did all my driveline fluids and plugs last year). I only have about 35k miles on my ‘12 so other than your typical oil and air filter changes I haven’t needed to do much.

Has anyone had success with the Hewitt tech bypass and passing emission tests in states that still require them, for example in the people’s republic of Jersey?

Is it true that the current version of the Hewitt bypass requires having a normal functioning SAI or can it be installed on a failed SAI system and still function as designed?

Wrong. Common with 2012, not the higher years.

I know the first gen HT bypass required a functioning system. That is the main reason I jumped on it when I first learned about it but I believe they have a 2nd gen bypass now that is even easier to install but I haven’t looked into any operating differences so I’m not sure if that is still the case.

With the Hewitt kit, the only visible evidence of the kit is a black wire running under the plastic engine cover.

Hi I am experiencing this problem now myself, I am wondering if the people on here that used the Hewitt kit had noticed any difference in fuel economy? TIA

If I had done the delete, and if I was still using my truck on road, I don’t think I would have noticed much difference in fuel economy.
