I noticed this sound today and seemed worse then I am used to. I know tacos tick and just not sure if this is that or something bad. Noticed today after coming home from work and been driving for over hr. Sounds like it's coming from top of engine more on the upper passenger side then driver side from what I can tell. Havent noticed any other symptoms other then a few times when I started the truck after I heard it, it would idle bounce slightly. Just a small up and down for about 30 seconds then clears up. I hope to God nothing major, have had a few issues with this truck and only have owned it for about 2 weeks

My Tacoma has never made a tick like that so it’s not normal compared to mine.

Had a bad ground wire throwing O2 sensor codes, a rattle at 2k rpm. Those were fixed by the dealership I got it from and now had it had back 3 days and hearing this. The carfax in the truck was amazing so big reason I got it but it's going to give me a damn nervous breakdown

Sounds like a defective vacuum pump especially with the location OP described the sound coming from. Passenger (right side) back of engine.

I don’t want to scare you and I’m sure one of the members that knows more than me will chime in but usually 100K+ is when the vacuum pump gets noisy.

If it does turn out to be the pump it’s not a big deal it can be replaced.

The rattle issue is weird. Did truck have 5k or 10 k oil intervals? I am just trying to understand if owner was like most of the taco owners who care by their own or just let the stealership take care of the truck with oil changes.

I too have heard pump having issues, I think even at earlier miles sometimes

Yes oil changed every 5k for most of trucks life. I am seriously at my wits end. I bought a Tacoma so I wouldn't be having these issues. I know it has 100k on it but with the amazing Carfax and shape it was in, I thought I did well. I am to the point I am wishing the lot would take it back but now I am stuck with a every expensive used nightmare. Yes I got the warranty but 3rd party warranties usually suck so I have a feeling I am going to be shafted either way I go. I didn't get a jeep because of their reliability and this damn truck making me regret I didn't. UGH

This sound like yours, so it might just be vacuum pump and that's it. If you have warranty, you can have it replaced and be done with it then.

I doubt there would be any other issue with the engine or the truck. If it was something within the engine you would see it by now drastically affecting the truck

Toyota recommends the vacuum pump to be replaced at 120,000 miles or 144 months, whichever comes first.

Only had a couple of minutes before I left for work so I started truck, sound was gone so it definitely happens after truck is warmed up. I didn't hit brakes to see if it started, I only thought of that after I left.
