Bumper covers or Aftermarket Bumper?

Does anyone have experience with the aftermarket bumper covers that stick onto the bumper and clip underneath the bumper caps they are almost $200 for stick on pieces of plastic. I’m thinking that that $200 might be better serve towards a new rear bumper. My concern with the stick on ones are that moisture will get trapped and cause my stock bumper to rust out faster. My current stock bumper is chrome and I want to go to Black. So the stick on options are the quickest easiest way. My other option would be to plasty dip or paint my stock bumper. Involves a lot of work. My third option would be to buy an OEM or aftermarket OEM looking black bumper. I can find those for pretty cheap on line for anywhere from $100-$250. Does anyone have experience with those, do they rust out pretty quick? What’s my best option? What are you guys thinking on this?

I’ve got a pretty mint condition chrome bumper, I just recently changed the look of my truck in went with a black and bronze look. New wheels and tires, blackout headlights, blackout badges, etc. the only thing left is the chrome bumper

Plastidip or wrap the bumper.

Similar results, much cheaper.

 

I’ve be thought of plasti dipping it or painting it myself, just a lot of prep work I’m too lazy and don’t really have the time to do. Never thought about wrapping it though! That’s a good idea.

 

I did a chrome delete and went with the Bumpershellz cover. I was impressed how well it fit and how it's held up... been on for a couple years now. Covered the chrome with paste wax (except for the tape locations) and didn't wipe off hoping it will help with corrosion if any moister were to get underneth. Don't forget the exhaust tip... covered mine with bed liner.

 

Thanks for sharing, that is my main concern with the bumper covers, moisture, getting trapped in there and rusting the chrome. I have sprayed the back of the bumper with NH oil and it does not have a single spot of rust on it. The truck is a 2009 has been kept outside its whole life. It kills me to see people’s bumpers rusted out because all it would take is a little bit of coating from the inside to solve that problem. I’m also concerned about how long the 3M tape will hold up and stay on, as well as how it does in the heat and cold

 

Yeah, i live in a dry desert envirment and the truck is garaged. Not really worried about moister. As far as the 3m tape never had an issue with trim pieces i've installed on other vehicals over the years. The bumper cover is tucked in tight under the plastic trim on top and also secured with a few screws you re-install underneth... it's not going anywhere.

Don't know what you're talking about or why one would spend $200 to glue something onto a factory metal $0-100 bumper that is heavy, weak, and low with a separate tow hitch

I had stock. Waited. Got hit. As one does. Free high clearance.

 

Which high clearance did you get?

 

I got the 4X innovations… I know it doesn’t have the cool factor that some others do, but I really like it, and the swing out is tank solid.

 

That’s cool but I’m more interested in keeping the stock look, just black, not chrome. I use my bed a lot, and don’t want to mess with swing outs, I also don’t really do any overlanding or camping so it’s overkill for me

 

The bed of that truck is used every day. Feed, hay, you name it… the swing out doesn’t impede its use at all, but if you don’t off-road/crawl, then there’s not much reason for a high clearance.

 

Personally I went for the covers but I also have a 5-lug street truck so absolutely no need, or use, for a high clearance bumper. Been on there for well over a year and still looks great.

 

unwound hate to have to open that swing every time I want to drop my tailgate.
