Just shut off the noise cancellation and engine noise enhancement. Very quiet now. I hear more tire noise than anything else. Why they do that is baffling to me. Why make it sound like a box of rocks being shaken. Now if they made it sound like a Dodge Challenger Scat Pak, I would have left it alone. Thanks to the OP for motivating me into buying the Carista.

Makes you wonder if they exposed these settings with a default of OFF, if anyone would turn them on, and leave it that way. Seems unlikely.

$100? The Carista OBD is $45, and you only need to pay $10 for a one-month subscription.

Supposedly the Carista EVO does more than the OBD and it comes with a one year one time access, no subscription to cancel.

If it does, the differences are not explained in the Tacoma customizations on the website. Maybe it’s in the real time diagnostics and displays.

Are the noise cancellation & engine sound enhancement functions connected to each other? Can I just turn off the engine sound enhancement by itself & not touch the noise cancellation? Would that accomplish the same thing?

I think you're correct. I recall reading something along those lines.

They are separate functions in Carista that can be individually adjusted. I just want a truck that the driver drives and has no weird artificial sounds so I turned them both off. It would be nice if manufacturers had a master switch for responsible, competent drivers where we could just turn off everything with one push of a button instead of having to pay more money or search high and low in every nook and cranny to shut off all the nanny systems.

    More diagnostics, but that's it.

Yep. And that's what I did.

Unless you want to hear road noise, there's no reason to turn off the Active Noise system.

I left the active noise on, but just set it to off, and it is much better with both off.

Im not hearing any unusual noises that concern me & only want uninterupted music coming out of my sound system...
I know anc on caused bobs world to hear noise coming from his aftermarket JL sub...

No reason to even bother experimenting, I havent noticed anything to be concerned with buy having it all off...

I also turned both off. I want to hear reality not trickery. That worked fine for 55 years of driving. And yes I now hear some tire noise. But is that a bad thing. Might come in handy some day. What if a tire suddenly sounds different?

Subwoofers don't "build" air pressure. A sealed enclosure has a fixed air volume and pressure doesn't increase over time. @OregontoBajaCA basically just converted the stock ported setup to sealed, which usually reduces bass output slightly but also increases the rate at which the woofer cone returns to neutral (thanks to the confined air space) which slightly increases the attack of the bass output i.e. sharper or crisper bass.

    Yes..
The sub vent out the back, is nothing more than a enclosure port just like any other ported subwoofer box with a ported enclosure...
You can port them externally if space is limited in certain applications.

I did also seal off my sub vent with lots of sound deadener...
Tossed the worthless JBL sub in the dumpster...
Now that area behind the plastics houses my 2 amps...

If sealed, pressure does increase. It's not an "over time" thing. It's a momentary thing. If that box is sealed, and the ambient temperature are high enough that air expansion is already increased pressure, then you crank up the volume, you could reach a branding threshold where the cone gets damaged. Same could happen at extremely low temps where the diaphrame gets sucked inward due to air pressure drop creating a vacuum like edfect. It all depends what they designed for as tolerance and just how air tight it becomes. But if you seal off the rear of the sub, you've created a balloon.
You can say you personally don't think the risk is high enough, but that doesn't change the facts of volume dynamics.

Got the Carista EVO yesterday & turned off the engine sound enhancement. Huge difference. No more exhaust leak sounding drone at 2000 rpm! Makes me wonder why Toyota would do this on a truck.

It’s pretty stupid. It would be different if you had a pic list in the entertainment center to choose badass car sounds.

Did the same thing, and very much like the natural sound better. Decided to keep the active noise cancelling though.

Note for those considering Carista - it can program your taco to roll down all windows on long unlock press of remote, but it won't roll them up with a long lock press of the remote. It's just not an option.

Funny this is I also used it to program my wife's Audi, and it's just the reverse. You can program windows up on long lock, you you can't lower them on long unlock.

    Go figure.
