Sitting in traffic and oncoming lane gives me a brake and I hit the gas pedal and nothing happens. I pump the pedal 2 or 3 times and still nothing, then all of a sudden it connects and I accelerate. Please do not tell me to get a Pedal Commander as the truck is equipped with one now and I am running in 1 street. When you go to the stealership you get the line, “we could not get it to do that”. I am so frustrated I am thinking of getting rid of the truck. It’s a 2021TRD 4x4 Sport with about 31000 miles on it.

I would suspect an issue with the pedal commander and rule that out before assuming something is wrong with the truck. Maybe disconnect it and drive it for a while to see if the issue goes away?

Remove the pedal commander and see if you still have trouble.

OP, if you want this fixed, you need to remove the pedal commander and see how it works in OE form. Standard troubleshooting. If the issue continues, the dealer is more likely to dig in and find the issue. The dealer is not going to T/S with a pedal commander hooked up.

    1. remove pedal commander
    2. check trans fluid is appropriate level
    3. get a tune, because most tacomas drive like this (1st gear is laggy and engages late/jerks especially in stop/go traffic. exacerbated by hot weather driving with AC on)

Is this a new thing or has it always been like this?

First thanks for the replies and suggestions. This is an auto 3.5 litre. One of the reasons I installed the Pedal Commander as this same thing had happened prior to the installation. I will remove the PC and try it again. I am reluctant to get a tune as I had purchased the 100K warranty and a tune will void the warranty. I wonder why Toyota has not issued a fix but that’s not for me to say. Again thanks.

i purchased the warranty too. i have OTT, its CARB compliant so the state of california said it was good...they're strict as a nun so thats good in my eyes. been to the dealer twice since getting it and no issues so far. also no issues getting inspections in NYS. best mod i've done to the truck.

Definitely remove it first and recheck. I had a hesitation in acceleration for a LONG time and I seriously mean a long time, no check engine light, codes, or anything related to the issue to help me figure it out and then I eventually realized after some checking out that I had bad VVT solenoids. Replaced them and the issue went away. It's still jerky but it's nowhere like it was. This issue is an electronic throttle issue more than anything. Toyota's throttle controls and APP sensors just suck at the end of the day.

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
Are you going to floor suddenly on gas pedal? If so, try about half pedal and then once moving roll into fully floored.
On many digital cars, I have experienced they don't like to go 0 to floored. One actually said in manual to do half pedal for best launch from a stop.

That said, my 2nd Gen taco had an occasional bog that I was 90% sure was an oil control valve issue. Traded truck in before I ever got around to confirming it though.

My taco is the first throttle by wire vehicle I’ve owned. It does behave oddly (IMHO) when applying a large throttle input at low rpm. I suspect that it is cutting throttle to protect itself and/or the driver.

Before I disconnect the PC, I decided to try the other combinations for sensitivity. I set the setting for number 2 City and so far so good. Going to try it for a couple of days and see what happens.
