If it were me, I'd be basing it on whatever software you're using for production is most stable in whichever OS. I typically see more mac's in live environments than PC's for music, but I'm only doing a couple shows a year anymore and I'm not usually the one with the interface or recording them.

i use Ableton Live which is pretty stable on both. on Mac it was really plug and plug with almost anything music related i threw at it although Windows drivers have gotten a lot better. i'm leaning towards the Framework (or any other Windows laptop that might pop up) because i do like to mix and master on my main PC and i was just reading that Ableton doesn't utilize some of the Apple efficiency cores or whatever. also if anything fails on the MacBook, i won't be able to pop it open and try and fix it.
i also don't own an iPhone or anything else in the Apple ecosystem.

I upgraded my MacBook Pro a few months back.

    M4 pro chip
    24GB memory
    500gb hard drive

I really like Apple products and recommend them.

I've had a Framework since day one. Great machine. I run it and an ARM windows laptop. BTW the ARM machine has also been great, but it's useless for any sort of gaming or video editing.

I know, but not quite as bad as a 5090. I trade them in every few years and upgrade.

Yeah, I don't hate Macs. They aren't for me, that's all. I use a lot of office 365 apps for work and game. A Mac would be great for the video work I do, but so is a decent Windows machine.

    The Noctua NF-A14 iPPC-3000 PWM
fan is installed. I was worried the wire brackets wouldn't work with the new fan, but they work and without forcefully bending them out of shape.

    IMG20250524094744.jpg

I'm glad I was able to test the RPMs vs Noise in the BIOS realtime to adjust the fan curves.
    IMG20250524114209.jpg

On the stock CPU fans, with a load such as Prime 95, the temps would instantly jump to about 92°C and creep up to 95°C before the CPU throttles. With this single fan, temps jump to about 80°C and settle around 83°C. Realistic loads such as AV1 encoding were about 81°C before, and about 73°C now. This is with PBO on auto for the 9900X with the above fan curve.

These are the approximate fan speeds according the the BIOS. The case is using the stock three Fractal 140mm fans with the case fan controller.
    5% = 350 RPMs
    10% = 870
    20% = 1100 - Slightly louder than case fans at 5v
    30% = 1280 - Slightly louder than case fans at 7v
    40% = 1500 - Slightly louder than case fans at 12v
    50% = 1705
    60% = 1930
    70% = 2200
    80% = 2415
    90% = 2600
    100% = 2800

I would say that above 50%, you wouldn't want this fan in a living space. I might also replace the stock Fractal case fans with the Noctua fans.

man, i wish i could get the MacBook Pro. the only thing i would have to complain about it is needing dongles for USB devices.

i'll have to look into the ARM Windows laptops.

i'm more comfortable in Windows than Mac, but i like a lot of things just work with Mac. no hunting down drivers or other workarounds. for work and gaming, i have a dedicated desktop PC. just need something for on-the-go.

It's very odd how long it took them to figure this out. Hopefully it's just a blip, I did read somewhere that the issue is worse on the X670 and X870 boards as they both have more aggressive PBO stock settings.

Since I'm only using my system as a server, I only need the display for the occasional command line stuff. So I set the UMA frame buffer to 64M. After I boot the system, only 63788M of RAM is available out of 65536M, which is a lot more than 64M missing. Maybe there's another setting I'm missing?

Finished updating home network to 10gig and got around to building a new 10gig nas from my old PC. Got a used mini mobo and case off of marketplace for ~$120 all together all other parts I pulled from old PC.

Still waiting on new 20tb hard drives to come but system is up and running with a few old 3tb I threw in to test on.
