I’m looking at buying this 2013 TRD sport 4x4 Tacoma. Extended cab.

The truck is one owner from Maryland. Tons of oil change records etc. I’m from TN and I know nothing about rust issues etc.

The dealer sent me some pics and videos. You guys are the pros. Will you tell me if you see anything concerning?

    what concerns me is

    - the trailer hitch is very rusty compared to everything else, why?

-the stickers on the frame look newer to me but the Toyota owners site only says “recall coating done in 2020”

here is a link to a video of the frame
    https://imgur.com/a/iAmF7eX

They are asking 20k firm for the truck. Only has 80k miles.

Am I crazy or is that a very rushed and lazy video of a truck that has notorious rust issues? We got a great view of the plastic fuel tank though. How about a video with the truck on a rack in the shop. Not even a view from the inside of the C channel? Leaf springs?

I don’t disagree. I mean no disrespect by this but the sales person is a female and I don’t actually think she knows what to do for the frame video.

just hoping to gather some insight from here based on what can be seen.

this truck is at a small lot that doesn’t appear to have a shop or garage associated with it

What's wrong is lousy recording. A video is fine, but stills of key problem areas are much more valuable

*I* would never buy a northern vehicle w/o a personal inspection

Needs further inspection based on the rust on the hitch, and the frame in the picture.
Don’t put any money down on it until you get it inspected.

Almost looks like it could have been sprayed with an undercoat, over top of rust.
Needs further inspect to be sure.. Look inside the frame, not just outside.

I'd bet that is a replaced frame if it's from MD.

well in 2020 the frame was coated under Toyotas recall. I called the dealership and they said there’s no record of a frame replacement in their system.

Yeah, The heads of the bolts on the frame are not coated.
    It's probably ok.....

But with the history on these trucks. I'd never buy it with personally inspecting it.
And if you can't personally inspect it, there are way to have it inspect. Should the seller allow it.

I wonder if the best option would be to say I will but the truck if they take it on their dime to a Toyota dealership for a frame evaluation and report

Well the vid provides nothing but a cursory glimpse. Rear axle looks good, but leaves are rusty. No scaling apparent, but not certain. Cannot see if laminations are swelled. The real problem areas are inside the boxed sections under driver/pass area.

Personally I'd want to inspect in person. Is it a Toyota dealer? They willing in give a written guarantee specific to frame that it's 100% solid?

What about the body...rockers, under doors, etc?

Not the way it usually works.
You, the buyer, pays for the prepurchase inspection.

You can ask that they pay, but don't be alarmed if they tell you to kick rocks, and then not sell it to you at all.

It happens more than you'd think....

We aren't talking about you OP.
For all we know, the truck could be just fine.

    I'd spend $300 on a PPI to save $20,000

I’m going to call around and see if I can find someone in the area that can do a PPI

You could post the vehicle and the lot it's on here and somebody local may take a look at it for you, get better pics.

Might be worth not having to pay someone.

The frame could be in excellent condition and be rock solid that rock solid frame and the rest of truck could have been flooded up to the sun visors. If that happened the truck could still be perfectly fine but would you still want if that happened?
