Interior de-chroming finished -- manual transmission (pictures)

Glad to see it worked out for you. I had read somewhere that strong bleach would remove chrome plating from plastic, so I went with that.

 

Instead of using all the chemicals, I just pull my piece out and plasti-dip it with the stuff from Auto Zone. I also dipped the driver's side A/C vent circle, which I have busted the clips of, but it can still seat ok and doesn't fall out.

I have redone it once and it does need to be redone again, but at least it blocks the horrid reflections of sun that can come off of that blingy thing.

 

Hi. I’m starting this process and have a few questions. I bought Klean Strip muriatic acid from my local Lowe’s:

I’ve read that mixing muriatic acid with hydrogen peroxide in a ratio of 4:1 should do the trick. Did you mix the muriatic acid with hydrogen peroxide? I’m also wondering if this “green” muriatic acid might be too dilute to begin with as it’s not at all green like other muriatic acids I’ve seen. Any help would be appreciated!

 

After you bleached it, did you just rinse off the console trim piece with soap & water, before painting?

 

Just rinsed it in clean water and wiped it off. I think that soap or anything like that might interfere with paint adhesion.

 

Is it not possible for someone to just 3D print a trim ring for the cup holder?

 

I just plastidipped the chrome piece that goes around the cup holder, and also used plastidip clear coat. did no prep to the piece at all before spraying, and mine has held up for almost two years

 

Thanks for the guide, took ~5 days to de-chrome, then painted with matte black spray paint & a few coats of Satin clear coat

The plastic itself is black. Once the chrome and the copper underlayment was gone, you probably could have just sprayed the satin clear coat and called it good.

 

I don’t love chrome, but I definitely prefer it for some contrast vs matte black everywhere. I don’t like the chrome bumper caps, but I did put chrome letters on the tailgate.

 

Ehh it was black underneath but it wasn’t uniform at all it needed the spray paint. My chrome was cracked in a few spots so needed this thanks again. Shame Meso doesn’t sell a set for us. Although probably would never be in stock if they even did, they can’t keep anything in stock

 

Probably just as well they don't. I have both the Meso and AJT trim rings for the auto, and I don't like either one. The Meso doesn't fit quite right and won't stay snapped in. The AJT double-sided tape isn't a good solution in this application. Mine kept letting go in the left side corner causing it to sit proud of the surface. I have a new upper trim panel on order and am putting it back to stock. Mine was originally silver, not chrome though.
