I was told when I bought the truck in 2020 that the guy had recently changed the timing belt. I'm just not getting around to looking into changing it. I was able to remove the cover bolts and bend the cover back just enough to get a picture. It looks pretty good to me, but what do I know? Does this need to be changed or will it last another 60k miles?

When in doubt, change it out.

Supposedly the 5vz is a non-interferemce motor, and therefore a broken timing belt leaves you stranded but doesn't harm, or ruin the motor.

That being said, the neighbor's Grandson snapped the timing belt on his 2001 4runner (5vz), and he had low compression on 2 cylinders afterwards. Didn't bother to disassemble and figure out why because the truck wasn't worth fixing (d/t numerous other issues). Buest guess is some valves got bent.

My takeaway was simply, replace the timing belt at the recommended interval period, because it's better than dealing with even the small chance of a blown motor.

    Agree with Red03

    IMO
Belt doesn’t look like was changed as PO stated. If u zoom in, even on outside of T belt, can see cracking

    Last for 60k? Kinda unlikely.
    Last for 3-5k? Likely
But that gives u some time to budget/gather needed parts for TBelt change(if you wrench)

Most shops put a sticker on the TB Cover with mileage at the time of replacement.

To add - every belt I can think of comes with the sticker. The appearance varies a little bit, but they're all (fairly) big and easy to see. Not slapping it on is just lazy. That said, it could have peeled off on its own depending on where they slapped it on.

Idk if its the picture or not, but when I actually looked at the belt, I didn't notice any cracking. There are some small lines or "ridges" that I just took for the normal texture of the belt. It also didn't look dry. I'm just trying to figure out if I'm missing something. Maybe I can pull the entire cover off and look without disassembling anything

I'm not sure, I couldnt really see any writing on the part that I looked at. Maybe I'll try to pull the whole cover back today

I would call the guy you bought it from and question him a little more in depth to when he replaced it.

Mitsuboshi is brand I have and it has run a long time
Probably depends on climate for the cracking and dry rott? Belts likely last longer in humid climates than in arid desert heat

With it having visible ridges, I'd say it's on its way out. Plan on doing it in the next ~5-6,000 miles. Plenty of good kit options that'll get you most of what you need with good quality.

    Ok I said cracking
    I misspoke
No cracks, but not typical wear for a recently RR’d T belt
    IMG_6924.png

    In addition, tht is outside
The rubber teeth on inside of belt will be more of a determining factor
