I have successfully installed an adapter to my stereo that allows me to connect my cell to stereo via a 3.5mm audio connection. Taking the console apart to access the back of the stereo was not a difficult as I first thought.
2004 Taco Stereo Adapter Installed.jpg 2004 Taco Console.jpg USB Port Socket Adapter for Toyotas.jpg It came with a USB port that I would like to install in my dash where there is a blank cover. All the USB extensions I found for Toyota seem to be for 2005 or later because the frame/clips are a couple of mm off. They look like they should fit, but they do not clip in as they should.
    1. Does anyone know where I can source a USB adapter that clips in the open slot (that fits a 1st gen opening)?
    2. Or, where can I get another blank cover so I can cut out an opening to fit an existing adapter?
Any sources for either part would be greatly appreciated.

I ended up using a circular 12v receptacle replacement housing when I did mine - here's the link: Amazon.com: URWOOW USB Flush Mount - 1M 3ft 3.5mm & USB 3.0 AUX Extension, Dash & Panel Mount Cable for Car, Boat, Motorcycle : Electronics. It included both an AUX and USB port in one, and then I got a 3.5mm female-female coupler to connect the stereo's cable to the port. Removing the 12v outlet was the hardest part since it has such strong clips.

I usually turn to eBay for these kinds of things, but am surprised they're not as available as I thought. Match up the dims to what you find. This one is fine but useless since it would be sideways (37 x 21.3: )

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/156002452077

This one is like yours and clearly too big (21.5 x 40: )

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/355110592364

But . . . if you like that one, if it were me I'd get out the dremel and enlarge the hole. There should already be 12v wiring in the loom behind it.

These are close (22 x 33) but from China, I'm sure with enough digging you can find a U.S. seller:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/386281320161
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/335224780553

As for the blank, if you just want to fill it you probably won't find one and will have to spring for the entire lower dash trim in your color. I have one from my CB install but it's in gray, maybe a member here has one they can drop in an envelope.

Edit: I know this is stupid but usually when someone pops those blanks out they throw it in the dash or the owner's manual packet or something, have you looked in the darkest corners of the glovebox? Just a thought

treyus30 : wish I had a 3D printer; would solve a multitude of issues. thanks for the tip; maybe justification to buy one down the road.

HoneyBadger153 : thanks for this idea. I like the dual ports idea and having dual cigarette lighter outlets means only giving up one. I routed the 3.5mm audo connection close to the cell phone mount to minimize the cable traffic. I appreciate the idea as an alternative solution.

Added note regarding outlet cover part: My online searches describing the part were frustrating with no results. However, I forgot to do an image search. That did the trick and found many sources online. It's an inexpensive part (around $5), but shipping can be a bit much for some sources. Shopping around or a local dealership makes it worthwhile. For those interested, it's Toyota part number 55539-32010-co (I suspect this may be interior color specific).

I'm trying a couple more USB port extensions ideas with slightly different dimensions, but will Dremel my way to a solution with an extra port cover if needed. Will post results when I get there.

rocknbil : thanks for all these tips. All good thoughts. I will Dremel my way to a solution if a plug & play option does not work.
