I purchased this 97 tacoma a few months back. 5VZFE, 5 speed, 4wd etc. I have the little to no maintenance history and the previous owner has not been much help.

I purchased everything needed for a timing belt job. After getting the upper timing cover off I discovered the belt looked very new and the pulley was still very new looking.

Obviously i’m this far in I could just replace it but i’m torn between the fact that it’s not broken and i’m no expert mechanic and surely could make my situation worse if I strip a bolt hole or something.

Leave it? Replace it? I’m torn. Thanks.

I'd take a peak at the water (below the pulley in the picture).
If it looks like it's not been changed, might as well to the belt and the pump.
You are almost half way there anyways.

You can replace all of your parts now (or have somebody else replace them for you) and not worry about it for the next 90K miles, or you can wait and then think, wonder, and worry about it more and more with each mile you drive. Your choice.

The patina on that water pump seems to match that of the surrounding metal...either the last time the belt and whatever else was changed they didn't replace the water pump, which seems crazy to me, or water pumps patina quickly...I honestly don't know. If it was me, since that belt looks pretty decent, I'd just wait unless you're gung ho on doing it anyway...I would however do a good coolant flush, including taking that stopper out of the block and drain that...of course it goes without saying if you're diluting a full strength fluid to use distilled water...I will actually do a flush about every 3 years running nothing but distilled water through the system till it comes out mostly clear, good way to get build up out. :rasta: (I also pull the radiator when I do this and give it a really good clean and flush)
