I started having this problem but I didn't really want to tear my door apart having done so twice over the last year (once for the window regulator and once for a broken door handle). I was concerned my door handle had developed an issue as it was after-market. Before opening it up, I decided to do everything I could to lubricate the mechanism from outside. I found that if I removed the uppermost latch mechanism bolt (see picture), I could access the right area with lubricant to free things up. So far, so good, avoided tearing into the door for a third time. 2001 model.
