Thats exactly how its supposed to be, you want a tiny bit of slack to prevent brake drag.

If there wasn't play there would be an issue.

    Paging @Dm93 for graphic.

I've looked multiple times as well and can't figure it out. You almost need to pull the assembly out and inspect it on a bench or partially tear it down. I suspect there may be a bushing around a pin pivot point that has worn possibly? Idk about Tacoma's but I have seen that before on other model cars. This is the first car I have owned with this tiny bit of free play in the brake pedal.

My others cars don't make a noise though. Also when i push the pedal far and its cold it will make a little rubbing/binding feel. I suspect a bushing is worn or something need grease.

Yea that looks like a normal amount of free play to me, you can't have zero free play because it won't allow the fluid pressure to release and will cause the brakes to lock up when the fluid heats up.

I couldnt tell you if its normal or not, would need to compare to a similar vehicle.
I do know the if its not normal it can only be coming from 2 possibilities.
Where the booster arm attaches to the pedal.
or at the pedal pivot bushing.
I do know the slightest wear at the pedal pivot equates to alot of slop at the end of the pedal.
You need to articulate the pedal by rocking it side to side to see the wear at the pivot,
Not going to see it by just manipulating it up & down.

Older rangers had a very common issue with clutch pedal, very similar scenario..
Slop before you felt clutch pressure which equates to not enough throw so clutch disc would not fully release when pressing clutch pedal to the floor.
Wear at the pedal pivot was minimal but it multiplies due to length of pedal & where the master attaches.

If you dont see any slop, maybe try some white lithium grease at both locations to damper the noise if you truly feel its an issue.

There's multiple pivots on these, not just a single pivot like most vehicles.

I see that now, appears they had to source the pedal from NASA....o_O
I do agree with you though, some play is perfectly normal...

Does yours make this binding noise when pressed far and it’s cold out? https://youtube.com/shorts/H7mgmbD-0n4?si=QtPLNublq1sypC17
