DO it!! I miss our tub, we used it daily as it was so easy to access from our bedroom, but the chemicals, upkeep and slow leak was getting to me. Sauna is MUCH healthier for you too.

That's awesome!! This HUUM cost $3500k CAN from Estonia. We plan to move on but keep this house in a few years and we're focusing on using the upstairs suite as a high end short term rental and basement as long term high end. This sauna was part of the plan. Heater pic + link for those interested. https://huum.eu/product/drop-electric-sauna-heater/

Got this handrail back together. There were seven 16g brad nails all nailed at seemingly random angles. Got those all pulled through the ends resulting in no damage/holes in the finish. Sanded up each end nicely.

I used a combination of CA glue (thin layer around the perimeter) and regular wood glue (along the inner area). Pre-drilled for a 3" grk trim head screw. Once I carefully placed them together the bond was nearly instant, as expected. Then snugged it together with the screw. Filled the hole and touched it up with some leftover stain. It's solid AF now. Not perfect, but significantly better than it was.

    Reinstalling it Monday.

The cabinets in the kitchen, laundry room and bathroom were getting out of hand so I put some full extension slideouts in.

Climbed up to take a foot off the top of the chimney, ended up taking more than expected. Whole chimney is coming down.
Found over 2" of creosote inside, but also found that almost every brick and all mortar above the roof was rotten. A good number of the bricks crumbled when I grabbed them to pull off.
Looks like I'll be rebuilding the whole chimney later. On the plus side, it'll be easier to rebuild the wall.

When we lived in the mountains near Yosemite our chimney was the same way. We ended up framing a wood facade with triple wall pipe going to the stove. Scary part was the framing of the house was charred from all the flu fires throughout the years. Glad it didn’t burn down while we lived there.

Eventually going to install a high efficiency wood stove. Will be running a triple wall pipe out the wall and up. I did masonry in my early 20s and am debating between framing it out and doing a facade, or doing a full brick fake chimney to cover the pipe. Good thing though, gaining a foot of wall depth once I rip out the fireplace.
When I was pulling out the original shelving that was built when they built the house, I found a post card from 1925 sent to the home owner from southern California and a notice of 3% rate increase from the power company in 1926. Unfortunately original shelves had to go as I need to rip out the floor and walls to replace the sill plate, bottom plate, floor joists, studs, and add supports to the floor.

Oh, that is nothing. Live wires stuffed into insulation without caps or even separating the wires. 2000s wire hooked to 1920s wire, LIVE. Multiple electrical fires inside the walls that somehow didn't spread past a small charred area. 3 and 4 switches on single light circuits. Live wires hanging out the side of the house on the porch at about shin level.
I honestly don't understand how the guy who remodeled it let his kids live there.
Lots to think about, currently 45 minutes from the house sitting in the Subaru with a blown radiator. What a freaking day.

Long time family friend asked me to "look at & repair " some rot on the covered front porch on a 1920's farmhouse. There are these small L shaded partial walls that hold up the porch pillars. They are built on top of the porch boards. Those are wrapped in cedar shakes. The rot was along one edge of the porch and along the bottom of one of those short walls. Discovered significant rot on the two outer porch boards the outer rim joist (which was a 4x6 beam) and at the base of one corner of the wall.

Had to remove the outer portion of the short wall to access cut out and remove the beam and to install the new one. I milled down 2 2x8's to 6" and used a 6" piece of 3/4 on the outside. Also installed the 2 new porch boards while that was removed. I ripped some cedar deck board down to 4.5". Square edges.

Luckily, the post supporting the porch was above the front beam and was resting on a concrete pillar in the ground.

Had to rebuild the partition wall and started adding/weaving the cedar shakes. That weaving takes time on such short runs. Nearly every shake requires a scribe, planing, etc. I'm also putting the shakes on that narrow return on the bottom edge facing the house.

Not knowing the extent of the rot, I only allocated two days, but got all this done in 2 days. I'll be back in a couple of weeks to wrap up the shakes and install a new railing.

Here's a shot of the opposite corner for reference.
