Well now it potentially still has a good top end. Run it until it dies and that goes out the window.

The key word in your above statement is "potentially" which I agree with. Thus, I personally would be more than willing to roll the dice on this one. But then again, what the hell do I know!

Did you get water in the oil? If so you probably just washed out the bearings and damaged the crank. If that’s so as low milage as your engine is I would just put a new crank with new rod and main bearings. I doubt the rods are damaged the rod bearings are your weak point. JMHO

Nope, oil looks fine. No water got that far in.

All you can do then is tear it down and see how much damage you did when it hydro locked. Hopefully just some bearings are damaged fingers crossed but you very well could have bent a connecting rod. I think 18K is ridiculous for a salvaged engine swap.

There's the missing middle section of the connecting rod lodged in the cylinder wall. The other end of it is sticking out the block.20250603_115627.jpg

I can't like this because it is costing you a ton of money but do appreciate keeping us updated on the progress.

Nope. Another shop quoted 18k for the shortblock rebuild route. So far I feel very comfortable dealing with him, I'll keep you posted.

I'm back on the road! Picked up the truck Monday afternoon and things are running smooth. I'm going to wait for the first 500 miles before I give the shop that did the work a 5 star review. Full rebuild with fresh short block, new vvt gears/chain/oil pump/timing chain cover. Heads were good, only 4 valves needed replacing. I don't know if it's placebo, but I feel like it has a little more power than it did before.

I still need to get a snorkel to make sure this never happens again. ;) Happy Trails folks!

I don't know what kind of warranty you will get with Toyota on the new motor. Have you thought about checking with Jasper?
