yes there is some form of traction control in 4l b/c if I pick up a tire that corner stops spinning

I don't think you get it. Someone can get a stellar deal on an SR as well and not care about any of the minor features you mentioned (I don't) and upgrade their vehicle with lift, tires, and more and be under the cost of a stock OR. I had to account for the cost of chucking the stock OR wheels and tires so I don't count that cost. Makes sense for some people. For example, I've never opened my rear slider, use bluetooth to navigate, not a fan of flares, think a sunroof takes up too much headroom, don't want chrome anywhere because I hate it, have an inverter in a box that I've never used, etc. Different strokes.

No I completely get it. That's why I had "for me" in the post.

I wish they had an Eaton G80 available. Had one on my Silverado and loved it. For my use it was better than a manual locker because I live in the snow where I want it to lock and unlock on the fly as needed.

I do see it from both sides. The locker was the big one. Much to her dismay, my lovely wife will tell you she now knows much more than she'd like to about getting a truck with or without a locker. Haha

Love your truck, and really like the winch set up. Super clean, and you don't have a 100+ pound ugly ass front bumper on it.

Thank you! I like the simple look, I don’t rock crawl my truck so I’m not worried about hurting the stock bumper, but it’s nice to have a winch for the snow/wind storms and also recovering other people. And I’d Rather have a winch in sticky situations than a locker lol

The G80 locker is the only good part on a GM. I'll miss mine when I dump my 2008 GMC.

So no need for the 'yellow wire' mod, correct?

Agree: I spend a lot of time in Maine spring, summer and fall, and visit friends in central Maine during the winter. I fly-fish in the Moosehead and West Branch region in the spring and go down every dirt and Forest Service road I see that's not gated or posted to reach the fishing spots. I return in the fall with my son to hunt birds. He has a beautiful F150 4x4 and we take turns and go everywhere in either truck with no issues or concerns... usually the decision is based on who has the most gas) He has more ground clearance for the rutted stuff and the when we come across it and it's a little dicey for my truck, we just turn around come back later in his... not because mine will fail the task, just less likely to scrape stuff. Perfect team match-up of the two tools; a nice luxury to have. (I think his Lab likes my truck better though... ;) lol) When I'm alone, I never really worry about a "capability failure" in my Tacoma no matter where I take it, until it becomes clearly obvious you're pushing the envelope: Then you just back up a ways and turn around.

Once in a while a game warden will come along and they are always complimentary when they see my truck in there and it isn't stuck or broken even though a "flat" (lander) drove it all the way in there.

All 3rd Gen Tacomas have an awesome TC system from the factory. 100 times better than having open diffs.

Ooooh a resurrected thread, I’ll play.

I’ve never been stuck in my truck but I also go out on trails alone a lot, so I keep things well within what I know I’m capable of doing with what I have.

For reference, I have done a trail that OnX rated as a 4/10 with ease. I don’t have any aftermarket mechanical additions like lockers or anything. Just Bilsteins and 265/75/16 Grabbers. I don’t do any rock crawling but the truck handles medium trails and sandy beaches amazingly well.

I can confirm that the Toyota Traction Control Limited Slip Differential feature and the Trailer Sway control software included with the (2nd Gen) Trailer Towing package definitely works as claimed. I felt it doing its thing once (sway control) even before the warning light came on in the cluster. Only thing I can't confirm is it activating the brake lights while all this was going on. (including the third... why would Toyota lie?). It definitely brought the trailer back to reality though, and it happened quickly enough that i didn't have to do anything: like a big hand reached down and grabbed the truck and made everything right. Well worth the asking price...

I've been in close to a foot of snow while using 4wd in my sr5. Truck performs way better than my 2001 tundra did under the same conditions. These sr5 tacoma's are more than capable under average conditions without having all the extra bs trds have.

at 1:29 he shows auto lsd working, never as good as a real locker but still better than nothing at all.

As for me I have an SR and drove down the wrong path in PA in the slushy slippery snow basically a back country one lane down a steep incline where I had to go to the bottom to turn around. I somehow made it right back up and didn't even feel like I was slipping or anything. All this on stock Firestone Destination LE2s 245 sized. So yes these trucks are little mountain goats even without all the cool A-Trac and crawl control. Wish I had my dashcam then as it was a nice 8" of fresh snow and I knew I made a mistake when I turned down it but was too far to go in reverse.

Though I still want a locker, but who gets to off road in Northern NJ.
