Has anyone used an aftermarket canister as a replacement instead of an OEM? Got the PO446 code. After checking all the VSV valves, gas cap and filler neck, vacuum lines which seem to be ok, I'm getting a gas smell at the tank area. TIA.

I have not. Considering I checked all vacuum lines especially at the canister and still smell gas fumes, figured it was a canister from several other threads I've read. Didn't want to buy one just for one use but will if needed.

Do you recommend a particular smoke machine?

Gonna look into doing a smoke test then pull the bed if needed.

I have always wanted to test a theory of mine regarding charcoal canisters. You can get charcoal at fish stores and in my ignorance I figure charcoal is charcoal. I think that if you could get the canister apart without too much damage why not try replacing the charcoal inside it. I have never had the opportunity to test my experiment, the big problem as I see it is getting the canister out without too much of a hassle. If yours is cracked you have nothing to lose except some time. As bit of unsolicted advice, when filling the gas tack and the nozzle clicks off, do not top it off. Ecessive raw gas gets drawn into the cannister and turns the charcoal to goo.

Looks like pulling the bed is the easiest way to get to it. Now to find the time to do it...

Can you not just drop the gas tank to access the canister?

From what I've read, six bolts to remove the bed and disconnect the tail light wiring seems easier than dropping the tank.

Agreed with pulling the bed, the plastic bits are 20 years old an this could go from bad to worse really fast. Did a similar job on a buddys F150, the plastic (PE?) lines broke and they are discontinued, this piping had multiple tight bends. We took the bed off for cleaner access, It took longer to fix the fix than to do the original job.

Edit. If you do decide to pull the bed verify first that you can get the bed bolts out completley first.

I agree, but I have revised this statement when I use it to, "Now to TAKE the time to do it!"
