Funny story…. So an hour into the cutover we get a call, 50kva can is no good. Are you sure? Anything we can do? No such luck. Only spares we brought were 25kva. Who gets to go get a proper sized one? You guessed it. I get to our office in Machias, find a transformer, move stuff with a fork truck to get it off the shelf and unload it, go out to the truck for a minute and see I have a missed call. It’s the lead on the job telling me they’ve done a load study and found the 25 will work. It was almost an hour one way to Machias. No biggie, we’ll head back and finish up. We get 10 minutes from the sub in Eastport when I get another call saying everyone is gone and we can turn around and go home. I didn’t even get to smell a hot dog!!

 

Today R.T. Green Appliance Repair was working on a Hotpoint (General Electric) dryer of undetermined age, we will say around 25 years.

The leaving tenant stated (when asked) "...the dryer makes a noise..."

I took the top & front covers off to find...



Bloody hell!

This is what I grabbed just from the front.



Safe to say someone (probably several over the years) wasn't so good at cleaning the lint trap - there was more, lots more.

Moving on, this is built entirely different from a Whirlpool unit, it even has a switch to detect a broken belt and a simple and very robust tensioner.



Here is the heating element with the cover removed.
The rear bearing slides in the socket in the center.



Long suffering readers will remember the electric heater I made out of a Whirlpool dryer last winter, the heating element is in the box on the right in the photo below.



Back to todays project.
This is what was lurking under the cover, the lint was packed around the heating element. Fire hazard anyone?

Also I believe I found the source of the noise, the new bearing is on the left, what is left of the old one on the right.



You remove 4 screws and can carefully swing the assembly out of the way, I just held it with a piece of wire. Then you can access the bearing socket.



Behold, a $75 piece of plastic, the top one.

This is the front bearing for the drum, the 3 green pads are the wear strips - sold separately.



The old belt was a bugger to get off the tensioner, you are reaching in there (from the front) and can't see jack.

However, there is a cover in the back...



Working from this side it was 10 seconds to put the belt back in place.




It is very quiet now & clean too, hopefully good for many more years.

Lucky the dryer didnt catch fire

 

I was going to say you could have cleaned that whole thing out in about two seconds with a match.

 

Damn straight!
You can see where the lint packed around the element was blackened.

 

Efficient no doubt - then I would have to buy another dryer
...and that whole setting the house on fire bit too.

 

Morning folks

Been random pop up showers all week. Rained yesterday, so today's mow might be wet. Although possible showers around 11am so mowing and washing some cars might be out of the question.

Got to figure out some better water management or start digging around the back foundation. Wednesday evening when I was going to bed we had a helluva thunderstorm. It washed away a bunch of mulch that had been super compacted after two years that's how hard it rained. Luck would have it I walk down to the basement Thursday evening and was greeted by a wet rug on the foot. Everything soaked in that area. Cleaned up and the dehumidifier turned up to "11" but I can tell there's still moisture under the vinyl plank flooring.

I also need to find out where the Hell mice keep getting in the basement. This week my one cat has caught 4 so far, one a night since Wednesday

Well crap

I've been pulling a couple 12.5hr days at work so waking up at 1:30am those days has got me all confuzzled

 

Just reading this is making me tired. I think I’ll take a nap

 

i've still got the sparkly formica top with metal edge.


this was a top-notch custom-built kitchen in 1972--sort of irritating, as each cabinet is custom-sized for the area, not built to any specific dimensional standard. every bank has slightly different dimensions. it's of course not as nice as it could be nowadays(no drawer rails, just wood-on-wood slides), but i'll also never get the same quality out of the newer stuff without going fully custom again, which would cost more than the house value...

 

ok, who can just spontaneously swap their bed time by 3-4 hours different every night?!?

if i get distracted and go to bed at midnight one night, i have great difficulty the next few nights going to bed before 11:00.

 

my wallet stays mostly in my lunch box during work weeks, or in the e-brake cubby on the truck when i'm driving on the weekend. i really hate having a wallet in my pocket at all most times.

but if i must, i have it in my back pocket. but usually only during times i'm walking-- flea markets, and in stores. the times i put it in my front pocket, i panic when i reach in my back pocket.

 

I could have easily been in bed by 9:00 as I was already dozing off watching a movie but made myself stay up so I could make sure my kid made it home from work alright (more info on the reason for concern coming soon). Place closes at 11 on the weekend then they have to clean so they're usually rolling into the garage at midnight 30.

 

I wouldn't mind ditching mine but it has my card access, er, card in it. That and after decades of having it in my back pocket, I'd forget it at work every single day.

At least I have the credit card number memorized.
