Subject: Help Needed – VF Tuner Reset Learned Memory, Now Trying to Retrain ECU (2017 Tacoma 3.5L V6

Hey everyone,
I’m working on my 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport 3.5L V6, and I could use some input from those experienced with tuning and VF Tuner. I’ve recently reset the ECU’s learned memory using VF Tuner, and now I’m in the process of retraining the truck — teaching it how to idle, start properly, and adapt to its current setup.

I’m not using a generic canned tune — this is a fully custom tune built from my verified stock file (89663-04B04) using proper logic and data pulled from datalogs and successful configurations. I’m slowly improving startup, idle, warmup behavior, and overall drivability.

Key Info:

I’ve cleared all adaptive learning tables.

MAF is now functional again with a recalibrated scaling curve.

Truck starts and runs, but idle and warm behavior are still a work in progress.

All airflow, timing, fuel, and loop logic tables are being progressively adjusted to help the ECU relearn its behavior from scratch.

Current Focus:

I’m asking if anyone here has experience with VF Tuner and how long it usually takes for the ECU to fully relearn stable idle and warmup behavior after clearing memory.

Any advice on:

Idle target tuning

Warm start fuel/air compensation

How to stabilize after memory wipe

How long you’ve seen relearning take


Would be greatly appreciated.

Let me be clear — this is not a “bad tune” situation. I’m working with a known-good tune and methodically dialing in all the adaptive behavior again. Just trying to gather ideas, tips, or experience from others who’ve done this.
