Just bout a 2019 and was wondering if I could take the key out of the key fob and put it away as a backup? Or does the key need to be in the key fob to function properly?

Physical key? Fob will function fine without it.

I do however recommend that you keep the key with the fob. In case of unexpected fob failure, you need the physical key to unlock the door.

Just get another physical key cut and keep it as a spare, it won't start the truck but it will unlock the doors.

Doesn't cost but a few bucks for a plain key.

I leave my metal key in my Fob. The hook on the metal key attaches to my lanyard. I don't like my Fob in my pocket where I could accidentally press a button.

I use one of these. It will keep the key with the fob.

Physical metal key opens locks manually (door, glovebox and tailgate) but isn’t needed for any of the fob functions (start, lock, unlock, panic, auto-start)

Here is a 3rd Gens Fun Fact. 2016s came with a separate metal key to open the tailgate. The metal key in my Fob (pictured in post #4 above) does not work on my tailgate. Thank you Toyota.
