Hi all, newbie here! I got this 01 Tacoma last year with pretty low miles and she's been great but shortly after I got her I got a cel and the associated code is p0402. We had a mechanic check it and he said it was related to the EGR and he cleared that, replaced a vacuum switching valve and gave it back to us stating it was fixed. A few days ago it started hesitating when I was on the freeway. Kinda felt like it was running out of gas but it was just little hesitations. After sitting and cooling it would go back to normal then yesterday when I was warming it up it stalled out after a few minutes. Now it's giving me code p1130. (No cel or codes prior to this morning since being at the mechanic). I've watched a million videos but I'm not getting a clear idea of what I should do first. I'm not going back to the mechanic, he was kinda a butthead and I'm fairly mechanical. I only went to the mechanic in the first place because my brother insisted. Any recommendations?

This code can be a tricky one to fix. What it is telling you is that the Air fuel ratio sensor (AFR) is trying to compensate for a fuel mixture problem in the motor and it has reached its limits of adjustments. There is a problem with the fuel mixture. Usually there are other codes associated with this and these will give a diredction to start the diagnosis from. The hesitation makes me want to say it is running lean. If this were in my stall the first things I would do is I would take the Mass Air flow sensor (MAF) out and clean it. Find the air filter housing, follow it and you will see a metal tube and some wires, that is the MAF. They usually have tamper resistant torx screws holding it in the housing, you are going to have to determine if you want to go get the special tool if needed and get the MAF cleaner and try cleaning it to see if this is the issue. Take the air filter out and look at it, if it is dirty, clean the MAF and replace the air filter, clear the codes and start over. This is the least expensive thing to do.

Find a differernt tech. See if you have an O Reillys auto parts store in your area, go during daylight hours and ask for the manager and ask him what shop do you take your vehicles to. I say daylight hours because the night crews are usually not that knowledgable.

Thanks!! This is what I was hoping for, a clear sense of direction. My kid is a Subaru tech so I have just about any tools I need and I can always go to him if I get completely stumped but I try not to because everyone leans on him for their car issues. And he's always super proud when his Mama handles her own s**t ;)
