I have a Gen 3 Tacoma TRD Sport that I swapped a built chevy 350 w 700r4/4L60e Transmission. I am now working with the abs system. I do plan on doing a solid axle swap with two chevy dana 60s however was hoping to role it as is for the summer. My issue is that the breaks are spongey now that I have removed the oem engine harness. Does any one know if the abs will work if I isolate it from the harness and plug in with just the ABS wires? Or any ideas or thoughts would be great.

Not related to your braking issues, or saying you are wrong, but why the Dana 60s? I would think with the SB/700R4 or 4L60E combo that Dana 44s with chromoly axles would be plenty strong. Save you some money, weight and ground clearance.

Thanks for that but I already have the dana 60s ready to go with all the parts.

Unrelated to your question but which transmission did you use the 700R4 or the 4L60E? They’re two different transmissions.

Actually they are the same thing, different years. This one is 85 so im pretty sure it falls into the 4L60e category. Either way its a bullet proof transmission.

    Thanks for the comment.

    If it’s an 85 it’s a 700R4 the 4L60E didn’t get introduced until 1993.

Anyway, it’s a badass build I’m a big fan of the SB Chevy!

I’m not sure ABS is going to work with the axle swaps. Wont you lose the sensors?

I know that abs won't work with axle swap. If you read my original post I said I want to drive it as is for the summer. Trying to do a work around.

    Thanks.

I am a fan of the swap. I did a 5.0L swap into a '91 Explorer years ago. It was a real beast when done.

As for your ABS work around, you might find it won’t work. There is network communication with the engine ECM, for throttle position, rpm and for control of the engine output. If the ABS module doesn't see these it can fault and default the system to basic hydraulic braking. I have not worked specifically on Toyota's system, but other systems I have worked with, that is the way the system functions.

Ok that's good to know. It clearly is default to the hydraulic. Is there a way to bypass and make the hydraulic system work better without the abs plugged in? I would love to find a work around or im just gonna spend the summer swapping out these axles however would really like to be mobbing around for now. It does stop just fine it's just spongy and makes me feel like I need to pump the breaks up.

A friend ran into this with his 73 Bronco. There was an unknown change to the booster for his own truck that changed from like 14psi of vacuum to 22psi. He was going crazy trying to figure out why the brakes sucked with most everything being swapped. His booster took a dump and needed to be replaced, so we eliminated that as the problem. It took some digging to find that out. The good, local shop didn't even know.

Similarly, your issue is that the manifold does not pull enough vacuum for a modern booster. You might need to go with a hydro booster like my friend did or get a booster that matches what your manifold can pull.

An analog 3rd Gen would be pretty cool.

The ABS system is along for the ride and only takes control when needed. Under normal braking it does nothing. So it should not be affecting the braking while it has faulted.

I would suggest looking at @tonered 's suggestion. The 3.5L uses a vacuum pump to supply the booster. Not engine vacuum.
