Is it safe to talk about ar-10's in here? :anonymous: If not, we can pretend I'm talking about suppressors instead o_O. So I'll admit, I have no building experience; not super knowledgeable about how adjustable/non-adjustable gas systems - but considering finding a can for an 18" .308 in an ar-10 platform. The rifle is aero-precision full lower and upper, so nothing special; gas block not adjustable. I've seen people can them, but have watched a handful of videos to understand running suppressed can pose some issues with blowback and can introduce new issues to a seemingly working platform that wasn't exactly designed for it.

What are some considerations one should take into account when trying to suppress? I know this is a loaded question, and I need to just watch more videos and learn some stuff, but I also like talking firsthand with those who have experience as well. FWIW, my use case will be strictly hunting, so the rifle will likely see >50 rounds per year. With that in mind, I'm not sure if some of the areas I'm focusing on are truly as alarming as I'm thinking, since it won't see heavy abuse. I'm not hung up on attachment method as I won't ever intend to take it off "in the field" instead of "on the bench" if that makes any sense. Gonna be a woods gun. Any first time suppressor owner tips?

Honestly, pick out a can, buy it, put it on the gun and re-check zero and function test...if it doesnt function correctly then start playing with tuning...

Thats kinda what I was wondering considering there's so many variables at play, and every build isn't remotely the same. I guess my better question was: is an adjustable gas block something thats typically neccessary when running a can? I imagine when you say play with the tuning, you mean adjust the gas block and buffer spring to the rifle's liking?

essentially yes, thats tuning...AGB can become important if you have a high back pressure can and when you fire, it's cycling too fast or something...but generally speaking that's still a problem to figure out AFTER you chosen a can or you shoot the gun both suppressed and unsuppressed with different ammo...if the can is going to be married to the gun, and you're always going to shoot suppressed...it may not be necessary

Every carbine and mid length 308 AR10 I've ever done has been severely overgassed without a can. Rifle length gas has been fine.

So since its use case will strictly be hunting, I'll intend to marry the suppressor to the rifle and be married to the same exact ammo after sighting in scope. With this use case and non-AGB, it seems I should probably just try to pick a can, shoot it some, test with different hunting ammo's, and consider a heavier buffer/spring from there if needed before going for and adjustable block?

Sorry if this is all really basic info; just trying to better understand what I may be getting myself into lol.

Generally speaking yes...i know it sounds frustrating, but the easiest way to tell how itll work is to get it and run it

No that definitely makes sense! I just felt like with so much info out there, different parts, different builds, so many freaking variables, there's gotta be some general guidelines to go by to at least help narrow down whats "compatible" or "likely to give least issues" given certain general setups. I don't mind having to explore different parts to fix whatever issues running a can may bring, its kinda to be expected; it just seems a little overwhelming trying to pick the "right" one, especially when you add in the complexities of the whole registry BS. On that topic though, I saw where the $200 tax stamp was trending towards being voted away. Haven't really kept up with that world of things, but makes me a little more eager to begin considering a can again.
