I bought a 21 TRD OR with 31k miles at the end of April this year. I was noticing the truck was shifting hard when going from park to drive and reverse to drive, the truck would jolt forward. I also noticed humming when accelerating the truck and it would go away when my foot was off the gas. I took it in for an oil change at 32k because the truck prompted there was maintenance required, and I mentioned my concerns to the tech at the Toyota Dealership. An hour later they came back and said the truck needs a new transmission. I asked why and they said there is a "rattle" like something is loose in the transmission. I asked about the fluids, and they said they were fine, and the outside of the transmission looked fine.

Mind you this is a Gold Certified vehicle, and I also got the additional 100k mile warranty that coverers bumper to bumper. I am curious if anyone else has had this problem?

Should I worry about a remanufactured transmission and push for a NEW transmission?

Will the warranty I have now cover the new transmission?

I definitely did not expect such a headache of a problem less than a month after I bought the truck. Thank for any help you can give me

Let them fix it and be thankful you bought the warranty

That is what I am thinking. I guess I would just question how far to push it. I have only driven it 2k miles since driving off the lot. I don't know how much resistance I will get pushing for a new.

None, thats the point of a warranty. My rear diff had chunks of metal in it from the factory, replaced brand new under warranty.

I would ask them to explain the details of why you need a new transmission. Ask to talk to the tech directly. The customer service reps often pass on bad information.

I will definitely do that Monday. I tried to get more information from her but yes, they did not seem to know much of anything.

Toyota dealerships don’t fix transmissions. They simply replace the whole unit even if it’s a simple fix internally.

Maybe yes, maybe no. What I worry about is some young kid installing a transmission in my truck for the first time in his life despite the fact that my factory installed transmission is just fine. Even if they don’t charge you, you could end up in the negative. It’s best to get a detailed assessment of the problem from the tech and ascertain that you trust his judgement. This is not as simple as an oil change.

The claim people with the dealership have not approved it yet. They are sending a specialist down to take a look for themselves. So, I guess I feel better having a different person take a look at it as well.

Read the terms of your warranty contract first before you go demanding anything.

UPDATE: It was the rear differential. It was fixed at no cost to me.

So Toyota said you needed a tranny, someone came from corporate, and it was actually the rear differential? Was this Todd at Bell rd Toyota in Phoenix by chance?
