Made myself a high clearance hitch. The one I had hung down way too low, especially with how I have the bedsides cut.

A high clearance bumper is on my short list. Even with 35s I still drag from time to time. That last photo almost looks like you got drag tires on lol.

My 1999 Taco with less than 47,000 miles, 2WD with Ford Escape (2005-2007) 16" wheels. They were a surprising, good fit for a direct bolt on swap. I'll add more information when I start my thread on the newest truck parked in the driveway.

Yes, I saw your earlier posting which led into a much deeper dive into wheel options. Hyundai and Kia make the largest selection of options that match up well to our needs. Key for me on the wheel selection was the hub match up (67.1mm or 4.5") so the vertical load coming up through the wheel was carried through the hub and no use of hub adapters. I know some here have gone with wheels with a larger hub interface. I consider that a structural no-no because the studs would then have to carry that load + centering the wheel, something they were not designed for.

There were lots of options and almost went with a 17" Kia wheel, but it looked too "Chip Foose"ish with a bigger diameter wheel and rubber band tire. Mine is a semi working truck, so no 17" rims. Even 16" rims had a too long looking spokes, so I chose a design with some extra "noise" on the spoke (at the ends) to reduce the look of the spoke length. Near the end of the search, I found that the Ford Escape wheel matched up well and had the extra design in the spoke to reduce the appearance of longer spokes. The only challenge was the center cap. The newer Toyota Yaris uses a size that fits (on order) the Escape wheel (2.125" OD).

Tire selection was also a factor to try and keep the speedo close to factory setup. I went with 205/60 R16 size due to very good selection number options with sufficient load index for my use (92). The tire width keeps weight down and has less drag (width) - all small things but they add up.

I'll post more when I finaly get my thread started. Since we have the same looking truck, I'dbe interested in all your mods to see what you decided to spent time and money on.

Curious to see how that center cap works out. For a split second I thought about finding a cap to fit but I was digging the capless look.

I went with 215/60/16 because that's what they had in stock at the time. Speedo is off slightly (only a couple MPH off above like 60) and MPG took a hit but i think that has more to do with the increased wheel/tire weight over the stock 14" combo.

I'm lowered 2/3 and it handles decently but I'd love to step up to a lighter weight 17" at some point with better tires and kick it up a notch.

Your mpg probably did not take a hit. Remember with taller tires/wheels you are covering more distance than is indicated on the odometer. If you are figuring out mpg by dividing the miles from your odometer by the gallons used, your miles driven is understated with the taller tires. Download an MPH app on your phone and on the next 50+ mile trip use the app to tell you the actual distance covered vs indicated on the odometer. Use the GPS miles indicated to figure your MPG. Then, convert the GPS/odometer miles to a ratio to use from now on in your future MPG calculations. (Ratio x odo miles indicated)/gal used = actual MPG.

I also lowered my rear by 1" so it sits with a slightly lowered rearend. I'm not going to do more as it's a 2.4 manual, so there are only so many beans that can move you down the road. In my motorcycle days, I chased mods to open up the riding envelope of almost every bike I owned. After 40 yrs of riding I learned if you want a larger riding envelope, move up to a bigger/more powerful bike. It's cheaper in the long run. I think that holds true for 4 wheeled cages too.

The tire size difference is only 1% so i don't think it had that much of an impact on MPG but I could be wrong. I went from averaging 26 to 21. I don't remember the exact weights but the 14" wheel was like 15 lbs and the 16" wheel was like 22 lbs. I could definitely tell the difference in acceleration with the 16s!

Are you referring to the dynamic tire size difference or simplified static tire difference? There is a difference between the two; I think the tire/wheel size you are running should be greater than 1% over stock (stock to me is the steel wheel running 195/75-14 tires). The easiest way to take the dynamic vs static reference out of the equation is to use a GPS app. It also takes into account your air pressures, etc. It will give a good difference between your speedo and odometer and what is really going on. We have a lot of speed cameras around here and the app speed is always the speed shown on the radar. This is the #1 reason I use/display the app reading while driving.

Wheels will be different in weight and all logic tells you the smaller diameter of the wheel is less than the larger diameter wheel... until you take into account the mass of the tire. The 14" tire has a lot more weight than the 16" tire and that mass is spread further away from the center of mass. For a given radius of a wheel/tire combo, less rotational mass = better performance. So, your 16" wheel/tire should outperform the optional stock set up that uses the 215/70-14 tire. It probably outperforms the stock wheel too as the steel wheel is much heavier over an aluminum rim off setting any advantage the 195/75-14 tire might give the stock setup.

Never heard of dynamic/static tire difference. Will have to give that a quick google.

Stock for me was 215/70-14. Discount tire says 14" tire is 21.7 lbs and 16" tire is 23 lbs. I did weigh both wheels so the combined wheel/tire weights would be 36.7 lbs (14") vs 45 lbs (16"). 8.3 lb increase in rotational mass was certainly felt by the butt dyno.

I should compare speedo to GPS speed at some point so I can see how far off it really is. that would be interesting to know.

You guys are overthinking it. The weight difference here isn't going to cause a measurable decrease in mpgs. There's an error in either the miles or gallons measured.
