Just took a rack off an old shell to throw on the cab to go with the shell rack. A little nerve wracking thinking of drilling the roof but it’ll be great for the kayak.

Thanks. 285s and about a 2.5 inch lift. Just painted the truck the newer Toyota army green. Roof rack is not back on yet.

    Well shit that looks great.

where’d you get the roof rack?

if anyone else has a link for a thread on where to learn more about roof racks for 1st gen double cabs - I’ve been looking everywhere

from what I understand my options are:

    - 1st gen prinsu rack $700+

    - OEM toyota rack (very rare hard to find)

    - Yakima Q-towers with Qclips #117 (117 clips are getting very hard to find anywhere and the towers in good condition)

    Any other suggestions are welcome!

I haven’t heard of the Yakima “baseline” working with 1st gen’s.

how does it attach? From the photo you posted, I don’t see any side clips? Very interesting.

Inno is another company that made a rack for the double cab and they still sell the parts on their website. I think they were the cheapest when I was researching a while back.

Thule 277 Fit Kit and the 400 & 400XT (I believe should work as well?) towers with the square bars is another option. The fit kit is pretty difficult to find but you could always set an eBay alert and just wait a while. I snagged one a few weeks ago after waiting about 2 years for one to come available. Something to note with the 277 box is that it's supposed to come with 4 plastic shims that slide into the top of the tower to help angle the metal clip. Mine had a hole in the box even though it was brand new so one of them fell out at some point leaving me with 3. You could possibly search "Thule 96-2002 4Runner" or "96-2004 Hilux" and see if you get any hits or piece it together with 4 "02" rubber pads and 4 "301" clips. There's a few people selling towers on eBay so those shouldn't be a problem. Here's a website listing different cars and the pads/clips they used which might help: Thule Fit Kit Database. I'm trying to learn how to do 3D modeling to make a replica and will post the file for the plastic shim on here if I can figure out how to make it.

Update: Got the shim for the Thule 277 kit modeled and printed it out. I used Nylon 12 since it's supposed to be heat & UV resistant. Fit and works perfectly. Here's the file for anyone in the future who ends up with this kit and is missing them:
