Hi Q, I wouldn't tighten the straps too much. Like H20 said you can use bed mat and physical barriers to prevent shifting. I'll upload some photos of my setup so show you what I've done to fix the shifting camper.

Q, Moving the straps outward was pretty easy if you can get the foam panel behind the brackets off without any drama. And I'm WAY more comfortable getting them out between the cab and camper now.

You'll need a some Proflex RV Sealant, 1/4" drill bit, and a couple 7/16" or 11mm sockets/box wrench's ( a impact driver to spin off the nuts on the inside was super helpful and I didn't need to scape off all the old sealant to get them off/on).

After getting the bracket and spacers off I just reinserted 2 bolts into the white nylon spacer and put into the existing outward holes (this positioned the bracket about 1-1/2" outward).I used the spacer as a guide to drill the 1st 2 holes. I then did the same thing again and was now about 3' outward (wish I would have taken pics since it's a little hard to describe). Picture 4 holes in a line top and bottom.

I then used a little Proflex on the back of the spacer and mounted the strap bracket with the original bolts. You don't have to over do it with the sealant since you can seal the holes/bolts/washers on the inside of the camper. I just tightened the nyloc nuts and used some sealant overtop so I don't believe they'll come loose.
