    Hey guys,
I recently picked up to 2001 taco and noticed the truck makes a pretty noticeable clucking noise if you let the clutch out too fast when shifting gears. It doesn't seem to be as noticeable when the engine isn't warmed up or if you just release the clutch pretty slow. Is this normal for a gen one? If not, any ideas as to what's going on?

The clutch was replaced about 5,000 miles ago if this is any help in diagnosing anything.

Yes, I've driven manuals for years in a few different types of vehicles and never really ran into the issues of the clutch making a thunking sound after the engine warms up. I'm just not familiar with Tacoma's and was just checking on if this is standard for gen 1's or if I need to go get his checked out.

Do you feel anything through the shifter ??

Are you hearing a clunk in the Cab

The bushings in the big clunky return spring fail.

Took a quick glance under truck... Seeing this round bolt, does that look out of place? Anyone know what that part is? Motor mount?

If the clutch appears to function ok (not slipping, fully disengaging, no shudder when releasing clutch, no rattles or noises when holding the clutch in, etc.) the first place I would look is to inspect the propeller/driveshaft to see if the u joints are failing. I had a Ranger that started clunking and it was the u joints (auto tranny, concept the same.)

I also have this issue, im gonna do a clutch pedal service and engine mounts and report back. I just did my u-joints and driveshaft is balanced but the clunk remains.

Check transmission and engine mounts. I had this issue previously and a new 4xinnovations transmission mount solved it. Avoid parts store brand transmission mounts, as they're too soft and allow the driveline to shift enough for clunks to persist. OEM Toyota mounts for manual transmission 1st Gen Tacomas have been discontinued by the way.

common things for driveline clunks otoh:

    motor mounts
    transmission mount
    bad carrier bearing
    spring wrap

if the clutch was done recently double check the bellhousing bolts, you will get some weird noises if they come loose

Hey so I ended up replacing my master and slave cylinder and tightening up the clutch pedal/master connection which pretty much solved the issue! I think the failing master cylinder was causing my shifting to be off and I didn’t realize it since it happened slowly over time. Maybe this helps you.
