    My truck started ping'ing about 12 years ago. I switched to premium fuel, 92 or 93 from top brand gas station and the pinging stoped.

    I just accept the fact that my truck runs better on premium fuel and only use premium.

    Throwing this out there. Advanced timing can cause pre-detonation as the plugs fire before they are supposed to. Since you don't have adjustable timing, it is fixed, could it be worn timing components causing a timing issue?

    I bought my Tacoma Limited v6 new in 2001. I have never run anything but top-tier 91 octane first from Chevron and 76, and last 6 years Costco. I know people think I'm wasting my money, but it isn't their money is it, and that truck has not pinged nor knocked even once in its 24 year life. You get more power (albeit nominal) because the knock sensors don't need to retard timing to prevent knock/ping you will get with lower octane. I don't want to run like that, just my preference.
