If the bicycle shop is open tomorrow, I might go bug them about options for the 29er. Swapping out a cassette, crank cog and chain should be easy and cheap.

I've had mine running in the basement for.... 6 years I think? Maybe 7?

Anyway, when I get home Sunday, I can upload a tag on it if you want. Mine is set up to drain to the condensate pump for the 1st floor air handler.

Fair warning, half of what I did would make a bike shop like. Some bike shops are really big on compatibility and will tell you certain setups won’t work because the manufacturer doesn’t specifically say it will. Changing the cassette, they may try to get you to change the derailleur and shifter also. Changing the chainring could lead to a new bottom bracket and crankset, with all that you could be into some real money.

I did a project for school using R to show gear ratio overlap with a 1 by conversion and then lost it.

    https://www.mtbr.com/attachments/gearing-chart1-jpg.1895930/

But this is pretty much the same thing.

    https://www.mtbr.com/threads/tech-deep-dive-on-1x10-narrow-wide-conversion-gearing.1170101/

When you set up a 1 by conversion you can kind of tailor it to your needs. It was actually one thing that road didn't take up. Road is all disc nowadays but they tried 1 by for a little bit and all the pros went back to a 2x8 or 2x10 depending, so they dropped that out of road bikes.

That swap is super easy DIY, drive line alignments are a PITA but easy, just tedious. Easier with a 1 by though.

It's similar to a vehicle nowadays - what corporate says will work is the only option for dealerships, which is why spark plugs on a turd gen from the dealership makes you disassemble half the engine, when you could just finagle it instead. Insurance and warranty and yadda yadda.

Bikes are $$$$ nowadays, too. There's not much left on low end low range bikes. You go from Walmart to $$$$, nowhere in-between anymore, so I'm sure that's part of some shops being strict on that kind of thing.

When I bought my current mountain bike back in 2014, a 26" 24-speed was still normal. I don't need a 1x drivetrain, but all of the current mountain bikes are 29" 1x drivetrains. Top speed isn't really the focus of those bikes, so they come with 30t/32t chain wheels.

Shimano has a 28/38/48 version of my current crankset. It's like I'd be losing 1st gear, but gaining 25th gear relative to the 24/34/42 crankset.

If I bought the 29", and swapped the 30t for a 48t chain wheel, it would have a similar range except for the very low end for climbing. I also realize I'd have to pedal a bit harder to reach the similar speeds on a 29"

These are the number using the calc linked several posts ago.

    Code:
    Gear Inches 26"
    ------------------------------------
         Stock | Upgrade
         24t 34t 42t | 28t 38t 48t
    11 53 75 92 | 62 84 106
    13 45 63 78 | 52 71 89
    15 39 55 68 | 45 61 77
    18 32 46 56 | 38 51 65
    21 28 39 48 | 32 44 55
    24 24 34 42 | 28 38 48
    28 21 29 36 | 24 33 42
    34 17 24 30 | 20 27 34

    Gear Inches 29"
    --------------------
       Stock | Upgrade
         30t | 48t
    12 67 | 107
    15 53 | 85
    18 44 | 71
    21 38 | 61
    24 33 | 53
    30 27 | 43
    37 22 | 35
    46 17 | 28

I suppose a gravel bike has a drivetrain more of what I'm looking for, but they seem to be more $$$ and I'm not a fan of the road bike handlebars.

Jason, where are you using your bike to be regularly out pacing the gearing?

Tire sizes being a bit different so gear ratios are also a bit different, but there are plenty of flat bar gravel bikes out there.

    https://www.specialized.com/us/en/s...MIs6z6tfqljgMVH05HAR0RMRvEEAQYBCABEgI72vD_BwE

Or if you do want some semblance of suspension, hard tail flat bar.

    https://www.specialized.com/us/en/r...MI5OWE4_qljgMVF2ZHAR1J_w0DEAQYASABEgJn2vD_BwE

I don't care about specialized up or down, they're fine, just coincidence that they were both specialized from Google.

Everything has gone to 1 by for clearance and simplicity, and opens up a spot for a control on the handlebar for a dropper post. Even my commuter bike is a 1 by for simplicity. I honesty couldn't tell you any gear ratios on that thing. She's cheap and rugged, and gets me to and from work and the stores easily.

There's a bicycle trail near me that goes from Cranston to Coventry, and there's also this one that I've ridden from Woonsocket to Cumberland.

Reminds me of how Toyota would say I can't just swap in the delay wiper stalk and have delay wipers. They are not in that part of the business.

And yes you can get spendy quick there.

Me I'm just over here with my single speed bike, though some DO have a quick change spider and chain ring up front..does that count?

Check out Poseidon bikes. I have one of their redwood models with the drop handlebars but they make flat bar versions also. They’re reasonably priced and a good value for what you pay. I’m pushing 3k miles on mine, I’ve abused the frame and upgraded everything but the way it came, out of the box, it was a great build for the price.

I took the family to swank resort down the Cape for a long weekend for my wife's birthday. This place is super nice. I'm not used to going to a place with turn down service!

Idk what it's called (maybe cabana person) but when you go to the pool you check in and a employee grabs two sets of towels for each person. They bring you down and setup your longue for you. One towel is fitted to go over the cushion and the other one is for drying yourself after swimming. The drying towel is about the size of a twin size bed.

I think I've officially hit old man status (again).

I don't mind fireworks from sundown until 11:00ish. Yes, I feel bad my kids are hiding scared because the house is shaking, but it's the weekend around the 4th and is to be expected. Lighting off fireworks at 1:30-2:00 AM is a bit inconsiderate, no?
