It seems to me that the pre-collision sensors only work during cruise control. When I press the distance button in normal driving, it doesn't appear to do anything. Is it supposed to work like this? Thanks.

They are always on, the distance is simply used for adaptive cruise only.

For me at least when I am in a roundabout my pcs keeps screaming at me to brake because it senses that there are buildings in front of me even though I am going in a circle.

The biggest trigger I find is when the car in front of you is turning into a parking lot off a main road and you trust that they will keep speed, the PCS haaaaaaaaaaates that.

My wife’s 2019 RAV4 scarred the sh out of me doing that. My 2017 Taco is nice to me, doesn’t nag me, nor mind my driving habits.

This. I have had the PCS kick in 3 times and none of those with CC active.

As mentioned, it’s on, but it’s an emergency feature, not an autonomous driving vehicle. Test it in a wide open parking lot or somewhere you can swerve without harming yourself or others.

For 6 years, mine has worked very well, only a few false alarms, and one time (I think) saved my ass, as the truck in front of me swerved full speed and I was quickly headed toward the next car that rear ended the car in front of it. I stopped with only a few feet to spare, my reactions times are still pretty good,,, but not sure I’d be quicker.

YES! That is a perfect example of why I absolutely HATE the TSS system! When I first bought my 2019 TRD Sport, as I was driving home from the dealership, I put on the cruise control. Now, since it was new, I had no idea of it having this weird thing called "Adaptive Cruise Control", which utilizes the TSS system. So when I was coming into my town, which for almost the entirety of the town, has speed limits of 25mph, I put on the cruise because the cops in this town will ticket you for 30 in a 25 every day of the week! That is one reason why I was looking forward to having my first vehicle with cruise. Anyway, even at 25mph, I would be coming up on a stop sign with over half a block to go, and because there was a car sitting at the stop sign, the dang alarms for the TSS system were going off like I was about to have a collision or something! But also, it was affecting the brakes, as it would automatically engage the brakes too! I thought right then, that if that kept up, I was going to take the dang truck back to the dealer! At that rate, I would have had to put on new brakes in no time! I read up in the manual [yes, I actually had to READ the manual!] and that was when I learned that to engage in regular American cruise control, or classic cruise control, one had to depress the button on the stalk, and hold it for a few seconds, and it would then engage classic cruise. So then, I no longer had the dang this hitting me with alarms and hitting the brakes. Now, having said all that, the PCS system hits the alarms doing the same thing, just driving through town, and if it 'thinks' that I am coming up on a car too fast and it 'thinks' I am not going to hit the brakes, it sounds the alarm that makes me think the earth is going to end or something, and it is SO ANNOYING! Oh, I turned down the volume on the alarm and I decreased the distance before it starts, but it still does it, although I have to get closer before it does. Still though, when driving around town at 25, it still wants me to start hitting the brakes WAY too soon! And turning it off only works while the truck is running, and resets whenever you turn off the truck. Again, annoying! And while you can completely disable it at the dealer, if you ever want it turned back on again, the dealer is the only one who can do it, and from what I hear, they charge a fortune to do it. I consider this an example of technology gone awry! Now, among other things, if Toyota would just provide OPTIONS in the SETTINGS for such things as, in my first example, of just being able to change the DEFAULT, for cruise control, from Adaptive, to Normal or classic. That is how it is done on other car models such as the Ford Maverick. I mean, that is what the settings are for, for customizing, and this to me, is simply a software change or addition that can easily be written in there!
