I was a ships clerk in local 34. So I did customs clearing, dispatching truckers to pick up shipping containers in a certain area of the Bay Area that we had jurisdiction on. A lot of other miscellaneous things over the years. A very interesting job. I also was in charge of payroll. I did not operate the heavy machinery in the yard as that was local 10. Many different locals of the longshoreman's union at the Oakland Port.

 

How long did you work there?

 

Hot and humid… only going to get worse.

I started out as a casual/temp worker when I was 18 but only got very minor work in those days. So had to find other work until I finally got full time in 2002. But did rounds of temping on and off thru my 20’s as much as I could. It’s one of those jobs that you don’t leave once you get in. You work hard until you are able to be full time.

I’m a kid at heart at heart still doing stupid shit so not feeling old yet. Hopefully when you retire you will change as I also hated my job for the last 8 years or so before I called it quits and went out with an early retirement package. ​
