Does anyone tow their horses with their tacoma?

I've got a 03 toyota tacoma prerunner 2wd, I was looking into using it to haul my horses with a small trailer cause I dont have the money for a bigger truck right now. But I wasn't sure how practical it was, I just gonna use it to haul my horses to the vet or occasional off property adventures!

Does anyone have a set up they recommend for it? Im happy to add things to my truck to help out with it if possible!

You need to know / provide the loaded trailer weight.

    Does the trailer have brakes?

How far to tow, terrain type?

I don't have the trailer yet I'm looking at some older ones but I wanted to see if anyone had done something similar before, before I bought the trailer! So I can add things to the trailer as needed I just wasn't sure how the truck would pull.

As for terrain im not sure i mean the roads arent usually super windy but it just kinda depends where I go I try to take the highway when I can or straight roads.

Yes, you can safely tow WITH the proper configuration of Tacoma, horse trailer, weight distribution hitch and trailer brake.

Does your '03 have a towing package?

What size horse trailer - how many horses to be towed at once?

Do you have a weight distribution hitch?

Do you have a trailer brake controller?

Search this forum on "horse trailer" and you will find lots of real-world knowledge. The community will need more specific information to answer your specific questions. :)

4 or or 6 cylinder engine? If 4 cylinder forget it, you are over weight and under powered. You say “horses”. 2 horses plus horse trailer is a lot of weight for that small 23 year old truck even if it has a 6 cylinder . I think it’s unsafe, I wouldn’t tow that with the horses and trailer. If you can afford 2 horses you should be able to afford a newer larger truck. Even with trailer brakes it’s going to take you longer to stop. For the horses sake I wouldn’t tow them with that truck.

I would highly recommend not doing this. I have pulled a small aluminum 2 horse with 2 horses around town. It was extremely unsafe in my opinion. If you know the value of horses it is not worth the risk. Buy an old 3/4 ton and save yourself the trouble.

Horse, or horses? Maybe one horse but I don't see it being practical for 2.
