What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Not cheap. Around $120 I think.

 

Any other cheap yet quality replacements minus paying oem?

 

Think that’s what I paid for mine 4ish years ago. Still holding up good.

The mis alignment of them I remember frustrating me think I used a punch and tried to stretch em to the right place. The push clip things that everyone uses for everything now days definitely frustrated me.

 

I don't think so. I tried the $65 yotaliners and they looked great and the clips were the best things about them. The liners themselves hardened and cracked after just a few months. If you're gonna do it and don't want to drop the $$ for the ARK ones, I'd go OEM.

 

I have oem ones but im missing the clips. I need to find clips that actually fit. Ebay ones are trash and oem is pricey lol.

 

I bought a few different size of plastic rivets. They seem to fit in some places, but not others. I don't really recommend wasting time on the plastic rivets.

 

I need new mudflaps on my 96 but don’t have the brackets, what have you guys done?

 

Touched the frame today. Moved some mounts around with the help of my dad with his grinding and welding expertise.

Some things to note: Double Cab Frames have different Bed Mounts. So we had two spare rails left and right from a 1999 extra cab which we borrowed the bed and cab mounts from. Rear Cab Mounts are slightly different.



Plasma cutters are awesome however we dont have strong enough electric in the house to run it for very long so it kept shutting down on us so unfortunately had to result in using an angle grinder like a redneck for the job. Took hours this way lol.



Welded on some new sway bar brackets and cut a hole out where there was rust forming near the leaf spring bracket. Frame is perfect otherwise.














I forgot a pic of all the mounts we cut off they are now chillen in my sandblast cabinet for another day. I have to purchase one bed mount from Toyota.

Old Cab Mount Bushings from both frames, pretty shot. I ordered a Energy Suspension Replacement kit which is significantly cheaper than sourcing OEM ones.



Next post will be welding new body and cab mounts into the proper places. Might not get around to that til next week.

 

Looks like the cobra calipers that 4runner guy made a kit before.

 

Started prepping to build another new harness for the tdi swap Tacoma. I originally built it with the older 1999 chip style ECU, but want to move to the newer style flashable ecu.

 

Idk what kit you are referring to or who the cobra guy is

 

Dude on t4r forum had a bracket for mustang cobra disc brakes to bolt onto our trucks and 4runner. I dont remember his name. Was supposed to get one of the kits but think I forgot about until just now.

 

Having some erratic braking problems. I took apart and cleaned my caliper pistons. Reinstalled and bled the brakes with a vacuum bleeder. I thought I bled everything properly but still having an at times spongy pedal. Sometimes very stiff, other times a lot more play. So I went to engage the ABS, haven’t bled it since then but now my pedal is really soft. Brakes are barely there. I know I should probably bleed the lines again, I plan to. But don’t have the time right now. Just to check, I opened up each brake fluid line at the master cylinder and the one closer to the front of the vehicle (opened in the picture) isn’t draining any fluid. Got a drip or two but nothing after that. Anyoneknow if that is a red flag or no?

Well, there’s definitely air in your master cylinder now (if there wasn’t already), so you’ll need to remove it from the truck and bench bleed it. That’s the cause of the soft pedal feel.

If you have ABS, there is a specific sequence to bleed it properly. I don’t know the details, never having had ABS, but I’m sure there are posts about it.

Also, the fluid in your reservoir is quite dark, meaning it has absorbed moisture from the air. You should replace it when you bench bleed the MC, and when you re-bleed each cylinder/ABS module/LSPV make sure fresh fluid comes out before you’re done.

I was excited for his kit as well, I caught on late after he’d already stopped making them. All you needed from him was the bracket and his emergency brake adapter, but I thought his kit was a great d combo of a complete kit you could mostly put together yourself.

I read him saying the e brake was weaker than stock due to being a drum style shoe inside a much smaller drum inside the circumference of the outer disc, at that point I thought it’s not worth it, I was hoping for an improvement in that regard, not a step back.

There is also the SOS kit, but it’s really spendy, still requires a lot of pieces like ebrake cables that seem pretty complicated.

 

Enjoyed the heat and put together a storage solution for the xtracab. This is a 2 piece platform that easily lifts in and out when needed and covers the entirety of the rear area in the truck. Was fairly simple to put together using cardboard as a template. Going to cover the wood in an outdoor marine type carpet in the next couple weeks. Fitment ended up being great.

Had no idea how expensive plywood is now…

 

Looks like I wasn't the only one with this idea this week.

I did mine in my double cab. The short back panel folds down for access to the jack and its tools, the body of my ham radio, and some more open storage where I will keep some emergency supplies (light rain gear, a few tools, belts, filters, tire plug kit and the like), just waiting for some latches to come in.



On the shelf above the wall, I have built a rack for a pair of long rifles that will be installed for hunting season because they won't fit in the overhead rack. I will interchange that with a shallow tray that I will build sometime in the future to hold some loose items.
