While you may not consider it “messing”, try putting your hand on astra when she is asleep. I’m guessing you’ll get a similar reaction.
It’d be worthwhile to contact a trainer and at least have a discussion about the behavior.

    Yeah.
I didn't misread it, your original post said she nuzzled Astra, but whether she did or not is neither here nor there. It's normal for Eevee to wonder what is going on and check on things. When a dog in that dreaming state wakes up and sees another dog that close to them, fight or flight can kick in. Especially if they've spent some time in the wild on their own. Eevee will learn to keep her distance, and Astra will learn to be more trusting, it just takes time.

just a couple of things tbh
i have she does nothing. this was the first time we have seen her do this kinda nightmare cry wimper? idk what to truly call it. it will take some time to get her fully trusting and to work with her but wont be the hardest thing in the world. as stated lilly our old dog was very reactive and would try and attack any dog she didnt know. i worked with her and got her to realize nobody is going to go for her and she is fine and over a few months she was then good.

this event was just a shock because of how close these two are from day 2. day 1 ev didnt know if astra was going to be like lilly or not so she kept her distance even thou astra just wanted to play with ev haha. the good thing is that after the incident nothing has changed between the two. they still run and play and sleep next to each other or steal each others toys.upload_2025-7-8_7-4-14.jpg
tried getting a pic of them cuddled into each other but ev moved as i reached for my phone (she thought i was going to give her one of my chips the little glutton i swear..)and then laid back down
correct it did but i was told it was the wrong wording (gf read over it and corrected me lol) so it was removed since she never touched astra according to my gf who was closer to them when it happened. from where i was sitting it did look like she nuzzled but according to the gf she just sat there and waited to make sure she was okay.

the one who will have to learn is astra(not meaning this in a negative way just meaning she has to learn she is safe here and not have the fight or flight). eevee is to much of a caring dog to not go check on her so i doubt she will not go near her or really learn anything from this i mean she is a heeler they are known to be stubborn lol.

this is similar-ish to my gfs old dog lilly who was very very reactive to other dogs it took time but we got her to the point where her and ev were good buds and she didnt try attacking her anymore it just takes time. this instance was just a shock as stated above because of how well these two hit it off.

I think dogs are really good at forgetting stuff that happens once, like this event. Except events where food is involved.

My girl Callie found a cheeseburger that some kid flung off his porch into the bushes next to the sidewalk in the townhouse complex we were living in back in 2018.

Every day for a month she would go inspect the magic cheeseburger bush on our walks. Maybe it had residual smell but I am certain she remembered it as she would pull against the leash even when were were 20 feet away.

Kimo celebrated his 4th birthday on Wednesday. I got him a few toys and some treats. Here he is standing up for his budget code lights--this thing is a ball with flashing red and blue lights--it's his third but he absolutely loves them. Annoying as F because it squeaks...
