Squash bugs are awful this year. I put some ashes from the wood stove on my plants yesterday, we'll see if it helps any. I've read mixed reviews on doing it but Neem oil isn't doing a thing to them.

I’ve had a war on them the last three years. Manual removal is the best thing I’ve found. Clean garden up promptly at end of season and don’t leave anything for them to over winter in. I figured out they were probably over wintering in the woodshed which is about 30’ from my garden. Last year I tried to do daily inspections, remove and mash them as well as any egg clusters I found. This season I’ve watered each plant daily and watched for movement, removed and mashed them. They will run up the stems to get away from the water to dry out. They breathe through their skin. I’ve gotten it down to removing about 5-6 off 16 plants. Occasional egg clusters found but very rare to see a white juvenile bug. So the method must be working. I have sprayed with soapy water in the past to kill an infestation but it burnt the plant a little even though I thoroughly watered afterward. Have tried neem oil too with little success. Did about as well as liquid sevin, just seemed to slow them a little. Now if I could figure out how to eliminate the boring worms. Those seem to be the final death of the plants. Good luck to you.

Hey fellow gardeners, How are the insects in your parts. As I've seen written , we're short on bees, bumblebees, woodbees and honeybees. Normally our backyard is dragonfly central and a sight to see. Not this year, I can count they're numbers. Lightning bugs too, gotta keep your eyes peeled to see them . Still have plenty of blood sucking mosquitoes though. Butterflies are short too.

If you can't eat them all, we cut in half pinch the seeds and gel out and dehydrate. Stored in jars, but make sure they are DRY. They're costly to buy dried and you know yours are better.
