I took my truck in a couple of weeks ago because it was downshifting hard when it was cold. The temperature outside was below 40. Once the truck warmed up, the problem seemed to go away. The dealership said the transmission was low on fluid and filled it. I brought it home for a week and it was doing very good. No more hard downshifts. I pulled it in the garage and raised the hood and there was transmission fluid on the floor. Not a lot but a small puddle. On the way to have them look at it the hard downshifting was back. They kept it overnight and was going to run some tests. I got a call the next afternoon and they said it was recommended to put a new transmission in. Took them two days to get the new one and get it installed. So far so good.
Kind of ruins your confidence and good feelings about Toyota but they did replace it promptly. We’ll see …….

they probably forgot to tighten the level-check plug and decided to replace the entire transmission instead of tightening the plug. that's what dealerships do these days.

I didn’t take the time to see where it was leaking from. Wish I had. I figured they forgot to tighten something or over filled it. Whatever was leaking, they were getting it back!

I ve read that some of the fluids are not at top when coming in new from the factory. That’s why the is a presale prep by the dealer. Guess they didn’t check. New trans… okay warranty
    Good luck

sounds very today's dealer-ish,,, can't figure out what is wrong? Replace it.
I had thought most brands want the failed part back so they can inspect. I would think they'd eventually catch on to this and not reimburse for jobs they could have diagnosed and fixed, but maybe the lack of real techs has added leniency to this.
