I have got code P0012 (Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1)). Used to happen once a blue moon, now frequently

Bank 1 is RH side I think.
Pretty sure I'm looking for this part below.

Above, it shows pn 15330-0P010, but when i put that into Toyota parts direct it has a crap clipart picture that doesn't resemble what i want.

Anybody else dealt with this before can confirm what I'm looking for?

^Yes for the V6, bank 1 is passenger side. (V8 bank 1 is driver's side because :rasta:)

According to the FSM, the oil control valve could be bad or the oil control valve filter screen could be clogged. The VVTi gear at the end of the camshaft could be bad too, but that's more difficult to replace.

You can remove the oil control valve and do some basic electrical checks as well:

@3JOH22A I plan to do all those things in the very near future, and thank you for the rock auto listing.

I suspected the coil was going bad on my 4Runner's Bank 2 VVTi solenoid valve. It checked out okay ohm-wise but it was likely malfunctioning when hot and cycling frequently. The filter was perfect. I put in a new made-in-Mexico solenoid valve from the Toyota dealer and the over-retard code hasn't returned.

Toyota's parts catalog is contracted to a 3rd party that also does parts catalogs for other automakers. A couple of years ago they had a Jeep grille (seven slots and round headlight holes) as a placeholder picture for the 2020+ Tacoma grille.

For your amusement, this weird looking thing is indeed a variable valve timing solenoid, but for the Ford Coyote V8 P/N BR3Z-6M280-F Probably very familiar to @blackgen2tacoma:

The Genuine Toyota oil control valve I bought had very similar inspection markings on the metal bracket as shown in the picture for the NTK oil control valve. While not conclusive, there's a chance the two might be the same.
