This method of draining the capacitors in all the modules works up to a certain year in most automobiles… on modern cars doing this will clear ALL settings and some devices will have to be reset and this can only be done via a dealer level scan tool, so, be careful, you could brick your car.

@F.I.LetsGoFishing just to clarify, you do know that there are 2 coolant sensors on the 3RZ? One for the dash gauge and the other for the ECM. The ECM is the one throwing the code and is on the back of the engine.

If you already know this then please disregard. Some people keep messing with the sensor that’s on the coolant hose on the passenger side thinking it goes to the ECM

Have let her sit a while and it’s pretty cool now so hooked up scanner and have connections.
Gives no code but yellow light states some monitors are not completing even after being hooked up an hour.IMG_0145.png Any ideas anyone.

In order for the monitors to run there are certain conditions that HAVE to be met. Fuel tank between 1/4 and 3/4 full, the vehicle has to sit for a minimum of 8 hrs AND have the engine coolant temperature and Intake air temp within 10 degrees of each other at startup and this has to be done twice. The first screen mentions the “drive cycle”, this is what it is referring to.

Last night was the first time it had been started in a week but fuel gauge is right at 3/4.
Will drive today until it acts up again which will cause the no connections issue and park it for another day being sure not to disconnect power and see what happens.

I read this whole thread but didn't see any talk of the previous history of this truck.
-Is it a Frankenstein truck brought back from the dead with parts from the junk yard?
-Is it 1 owner stock truck hand me down from grampa?
    -previous engine swaps/repairs?
-how was the truck driving before this CEL?

I had a previous thread back in April and thought I had fixed it but exact problems resurfaced. None of the parts I threw at it made any difference. But the basics are…….
Second owner, first was sil. Only things not original before issues are distributor, radiator and balljoints.
Since problem started I have changed
Upstream 02, distributor, plugs, wires, tested egr valve, filter and lines.
Stared running badly last April so bought new car and retire this to backup/ woods truck. Truck runs good after sitting a few days then put on road and eventually starts running poor and rich with CIL and no code.

Warmed up truck and once it got to where the idle kicked down got CIL for po115 on new coolant sensor. Freeze frame shows it reading 283*f but not missing. Temp gauge is in normal position on scale. This is the 3rd sensor swap and same issue. Could this be an issue with thermostat or something in wiring?

Battery died and cleared any stored codes. Had to jumpstart and drove truck around with no issues and no CIL? Have done nothing but check connections at cts. Going to order new connector from Toyota if they can get one.

IMG_0460.jpg IMG_0460.jpg Well revisiting this thread as issues have returned.
On our last adventure, replacing the electrical connector seemed to fix the issue we were having and truck ran well for what it is.
Had to clean out power steering system last fall and had to replace another cts when the code appeared and have been driving her daily since last October .
Started acting up the other day and find myself back to OBDII connection errors and running rich.
Tried the connecting +- terminals trick and broke down and got an oem cts but still no connection for codes.
I started reading in several forums how this could actually be an ECU issue so I have pulled it and removed the cover to inspect.
While I don’t see any of obvious signs of cap leakage, I do see so resistors that look questionable. Primary the light blue ones in the upper right.
    Any thoughts?
