Long shot... what is this mystery cable?

I'm installing a Redarc brake controller on my 2008 TRD Sport with tow package. This controller has an adjustment dial that fits in one of the poverty button blanks. When I reached up behind a blank to push it out, I found this cable lodged into the back of it. I followed it but within a few inches it gets wrapped up in a bunch of other wires and I can't tell where it goes.

This is the long shot - what is it? I'm guessing the previous owner had a usable switch in that location but at some point removed it and put the blank back. Other than unwrapping the tape covering the harnesses, how can I figure out what it does or goes?

The wire in the foreground with the foam on it is the mystery wire that joins that mass above the fuse box.

I'm totally unfamiliar with your generation (I have a 3rd gen), but on my vehicle there are various connectors incorporated into the wiring harnesses that are not connected to anything, they are for features/switches my vehicle is not equipped with from the factory. I would say the previous owner had no idea either.

Perhaps there will come along an experienced, whatever generation your vehicle is, person with the information.

That spot is where the RSCA switch is on my '15 SR5. It lets you turn the roll sensor for the side curtain airbags off so that they don't deploy off road

Interesting, I have been thinking about investigating how to turn off all airbags while off-roading my 3rd gen.

Thanks. I had to Google that. I wonder why someone would remove it and put a blank in its place? I don't go off road, so I don't need it, but maybe I'll add it back just because. $20 part...

Perhaps someone was overly concerned and never wanted the feature to accidentally deactivate due to an errant finger push. According to the last item in your paste it reactivates with each ignition cycle. If you never wish to deactivate it there is no reason for a button, ever.

Or perhaps they just needed the position for an other button such as a trailer brake.

Your paste also says it was a standard feature. I would run my VIN through Toyota’s owners site to see just how the vehicle was equipped upon initial sale.

Take a look at trucks with a switch in that spot. The connector is part of a generic wiring harness that works on all truck models, it's just that your truck doesn't have the optional equipment that switch would control, so there is no switch there and the pigtail gets plugged into the blank. Somewhere else in the truck is another connector that would plug into whatever gizmo you don't have that is controlled by that switch.
