I test fit the bushing over my shaft and it won’t slide all the way. The needle bearing has no issue. Has anyone else come across this?

...is it backwards? ...not sure how far it would slide on from that way, as I've never seen anyone 'test fit' it to the axle, but looks like the 'finished' or more 'rounded' end is facing the wrong way?

The finished end is facing the boot as it would be installed in the differential.

OEM or aftermarket CV axles? Were the CV axles replaced before?

It shouldn't slide on and off like the needle bearing...the play in the needle bearing is part of the reason you're swapping it for the bushing...

If you have difficulty getting the bushing into the diff, you can put the bushing in the freezer. It will shrink it some and make it easier to install.

Do you have the right bushings for your 3rd Gen Tacoma, and you got it directly from ECGS? Also, you can get the remove, and install hardware from ECGS. These are the photos of legit ECGS bushing.

Yes, ordered directly from ECGS. I purchased the entire kit and already have my needle bearing out. Removal was easy as pie. I build experimental aircraft so probably why I have the tendency to test fit initially.

I’ve seen videos online where the bushing slides all the way (example below). Is the bushing (or the shaft tapered)? The bushing only slides on one way, luckily the correct way, but it seems way too tight once on the axle.

You can see the shine from where the needle bearing originally sat so that is the area it should be riding.
Bushing photo looks like its sitting flush with diff facing shoulder and there isn't any axle shine on the wheel facing side.
It is larger than the original needle bearing assembly and does protrude a millimeter closer to the axle seal once installed
The video example is certainly something that would give me pause but who knows what axle they are using in the demo either.
makes me wish i did a test fit.. (my bushing is sitting halfway, 3d printed install tool broke).

Did you contact ECGS why in your case, the bushing don’t slide all the way in?
