My dealership tells me I need to replace the vacuum pump on my 23 TRD OR with a manual. Regular maintenance at 120,000 miles. My question is does this truck even have a vacuum pump? Seems like I’ve read everywhere that the OR’s and Pros have a hydraulic system to accommodate the crawl control and traction stuff. Does the fact that it’s a manual come into play? Any answers appreciated. Thanks!

And what is it they tell you isn't working correctly? That would be the first clue.

40k per year is a lot of driving!

No, you don’t have a vacuum pump. That dealer is full of garbage, as are many of them.

Manual makes no difference. It all has to do with what brake booster you have.

It’s a maintenance item to replace on the schedule (according to owner’s manual). So that’s why are they recommending it, but either they are not very sharp and don’t realize he doesn’t have one, or they are wanting to rip the guy off and change an imaginary part.

Where is it, what does it do (what system is it part of), why is it a maintenance item, and why doesn't he have one?

A vacuum pump? It supplies vacuum to a brake booster for engines that don’t provide adequate intake vacuum. He doesn’t have one because he has an offroad with the electronically controlled hydraulic booster. It’s a maintenance item because they wear out, on the models they are installed on.

Interesting. Brake booster I'm familiar with, fed from the engine as you mention. Is this pump a 3.5 'feature' not found on 2.7s or 2g 4.0s?

Correct. The 3.5 with its Atkinson cycle makes practically no usable vacuum.

I think the vacuum pump is only available on the TRD Sport, SR5 and SR trim levels with the 3.5.

Thanks for the reply’s! They wanted $900 for installing a part not even on my truck. That was after I asked if they were sure the truck had one.

Scheduled maintenance is to replace the vacuum pump at 120,000 miles?

    $400+ for the pump!

So how is the pump lubricated? How many miles are people getting before they notice any issues? Any tricks for improving the life of the pump?

It gets a bit of oil by the hole in the piece that goes into the cam. Not really anything you can do to prolong life. It’s frustrating that today’s modern engines have forced us to need vacuum pumps. It’s just another thing to deal with.
