Installed 35" tires and now the truck is a DOG. It will be a while before I take the step up to 5.29 gears.

I've been thinking about putting the transmission into learning mode and see if it has any effect upon the truck's performance.

    Any thoughts?

Sure if you want, it will learn on it's own but that will speed things up. It won't make it any faster or much of a difference IMO. You need a tune at minimum but regearing is the only real solution.

    2 things.
How do you put the trany in a learning mode?
Known Fact. Tranny does not learn. It follows tables and values.

Congrats your truck now drives like a 2nd gen with 5-speed automatic. ;)

Just drive around manually selecting gears in S mode. Use one lower gear than usual. Where you'd normally be in 4th gear, go into 3rd. Where you'd normally be in 3rd gear, use 2nd. Don't be afraid to keep the revs up. You can even get a tune that raises the stock redline from 6500 to 7250 rpm.

I figured he meant disconnecting the battery. 3rd gen guys seem to think it helps with the harsh and odd shifting. I've even seen threads where people say their new 3rd gen needs to be driven for several thousand miles to learn. I don't think most realize it's all based on temp, load and speed.

I ran 15.5 1/4 stock with 1K miles on the ODO.

35s, it was 17.x. stock gears but I do have a tune. Yes it is sluggish. 15.0mpg entire tank all hwy, but 80+mph.

    Typically I get 13mpg city.

Use the skinny pedal. I believe in you.

You know I've never used that button since new when I found it did nothing detectable to my pants.
I am also lazy and will not bother pushing it each time I start the truck. But I will try it again.

Techstream has an option to put the vehicle back to default and there is some learning it does. Every major repair to the transmission one is supposed to do the reset. I have read that in a repair procedure on replacing the valve body from Toyota and have also watched a transmission valve body repair shop video saying the same thing.

    Probably worse.

ETC changes the transmissions shifting points such that it keeps the rpm higher. I liked it on my 2016 auto. If shifted more like I do with my 2020 manual. You can also change the shift points by using the skinny pedal.

I knew the milage on the Tacoma was bad from the start and I have never done my calculations on true gas milage - I do document each fill up, but as I say have not done the math.

First of all , unplugging the battery does not reset learning values. Need a scanner to reset the learning values.
Second of all, the tranny will learn in 100-200 variable speed driving.
Dudes that said it will "learn" in xxxx miles just got used to it.
I went from 31 to 32 and I felt it even tuned

Unlike many I have been happy with the performance of the truck. Even going from the stock 30.6" to 33" tires was not at all detrimental for me; 33" to these 35" I feel very much.

I hope I have properly corrected your question.

The 35"s are possibly the final step in tire size as I do not think the stock axels and a few other parts in the front end will survive the rocks on Rubicon and Fordyce. Rubicon I am confident I can make it through; Fordyce will have to be determined.

The 35" I will call my "boots" and my lesser 30.6" and 33" tires I will call my "shoes" and "sandals". I will change them when I go 4-wheeling. I will be going back down to the stock 30.6" to reduce noise and see just what vibrations and other problems I produce with the changes in vehicle set up as it is built. With MT tires it is really hard to hear what is going on.

    Other changes coming:
    Armor
    Some sort of lift.
    Crawl box 4.7
ARBs front and rear - do not like the Toyota E-locker. Too slow in activation.
    Flat belly - self fabricated.
There are more I can't think of right now.

You know stock rivian conquered Rubicon.

Are you accounting for the difference in tire size? On my truck 35s are 10% bigger than stock so without regearing or adjusting the speedo I have to add 10% to get my true fuel economy. E.g., 13mpg = 14.3mpg. Not a massive difference by any means but something to be aware of.

At where northern California gas prices are this is negligible.

How’d you get 35s without any kind of lift, did you tub the wheel wells?

Are you looking at the taco box?
