So you push your 1st gen offroad - what cracks next?

See this is why I haven't installed my NWF case yet, so I can learn from all of you and long term reliability of cutting the floor out. It absolutely has nothing to do with my laziness whatsoever.

 

This hack job...

I used what I had on hand and ideally the holes would have been great to spot weld but the gaps were too big. Couldn't see half the time either with my hood. Definitely some cold welds in there but it kept burning through to a minimum.

Almost burned it to the ground but amidst the panic I for some reason put the fire out. Next time I'll back it out of the garage and into the street and grab some marshmallows.

 

I feel this in my bones on occasion.

 

Kind of surprising you bashers are not seeing more of the cab/rear seam failures. Back in the day it seemed to be the first place to go.

 

Ha. What was the solution back in the day?

 

About like these days I guess. Welding here, sheet scabs there, even nut and bolt scabs.

 

Was this prior to the internet? Haven't seen anyone else with these issue on the webs anywhere

 

My fucks are pretty much gone with this truck anymore.

 

A little googling shows a TTORA thread from 16 years ago with the same issue.

In my amateur forensic sheet metal investigation, I think one of the main culprits of the floor pan sagging is from cutting into this seam area.
There seems to be some sort of cap/scab plate on the underside that I extended my tunnel cut into. It's visibly separating from the seam sealer on the edges.



Thinking of spanning the width of the cab with some 3/4" square tube welded to the top of that seam and over the tunnel for bracing after jacking it up flatter.
Then possible stitching some 1/8in flat here and there on the flatter sections. The floor has more dips and height to it than I thought which makes it a bit tricker.



Might as well sound deaden the whole thing while I'm at it.
Anyone have any material recommendations? I stripped off all of the crusty factory crap so it sounds like a proper bucket of bolts now

after my last wheeling trip on the previous owner’s awesome set up of:

spacer lift up front with original shocks (175k) and original rear leaf springs and shocks (175k) loaded up and riding on the bump stops the entire time…what cracked?

I'm minus 6 teeth including wisdom teeth.
The front implant was from when I hit myself in the face with a surfboard.
The other one was neglect. I had a bad cavity that I didn't feel because those teeth have very little sensation from when I broke my cheekbone off my skull, orbital bone and upper jaw (the screws and plates) .
