177,000 miles on my original clutch and it's still working fine.
Yes, it shifts clunky, yes, Redline helps a bunch and keep it changed every 30k miles. Yes, I have the rev hang as well and it doesn't bother me.

I don’t really dig my transmission so I did the following below to help mitigate the distaste for it. That said it has helped. I’m at 160K on the stock clutch, when the clutch finally goes I’m seriously debating on swapping in a 3rd gen manual trans, yes it fits and they shift buttery smooth compared to this dump truck trans. It has better gearing also.
I didn’t realize how spoiled I’ve been driving manual Honda’s and Acura’s for the past 20+ years, until I bought this truck .

    1. Did the accumulator delete (have to bleed the clutch after this, so that was done as well)
    2. Adjusted the clutch pedal free travel.
    3. Installed a new oem shifter seat (tried the Marlin Crawler delrin shifter seat, it was way too stiff getting into gear, stick with oem)
    4. Switched over to Redline MT90 gear oil
    5. Installed a TRD short shifter.

Someone explain this rev hand to me like I’m 5, 200k miles on 2 different 2gen ac trd or manuals, towing and loads too heavy and haven’t noticed?
    That reverse tho

Rev hang is essentially the engine not returning to idle immediately after the throttle is released, instead it ramps it down. Depending how you drive you may or may not notice it as much.

In the old days of carburetors the engine came back to idle pretty much immediately when the throttle was released, fuel injected engines bring it down more slowly for emissions and anti-stall. Some have a longer delay than others.

Echoing what others said about the reverse gear.

If you tow & need to reverse a trailer up any kind of steep driveway or roadway, getting the 2LO module (or jerry-rigging the mod yourself; there are other methods) is basically required. Without 2LO active the clutch starts to burn and glaze very quickly.

Factory rev-hang is insanely bad. The best way to deal with it is to install (IMO) the OTT (Overland Torque Tune.) I self-installed OTT and am totally satisfied with it.

At 90K miles I have light TOB chirp. Yes, even with rev-hang greatly reduced via OTT tune the thing still shifts like a (dump) truck, there is just no way to make quick shifts with this transmission in gears 1-4.

I don't understand why the reverse gear is so ridiculously tall. The only thing I can think of is maybe this trans. was designed for a tractor and they made parts for 300,000 tractors but only sold 75,000 tractors, had 225,000 units worth of parts leftover and decided it was too expensive to re-do the gearing & just passed the inconvenience along to the end user/owner.

    I've done everything.

    Hurst/core short shifter
Not redline (may need to try) but Amsoil trans oil
    Accumulator delete
    HPtuned Rev hang delete
    Upgraded clutch (due to supercharged)
URD quill throwout bearing fix. Never had the chirp but installed while doing clutch upgrade as preventative maintenance. Been good so far but haven't put that many miles since the install.

Still sometimes notchy shifting but pretty good overall and with the Rev hang delete I heel toe shift a lot for fun (have a gas pedal spacer to make even height with brake pedal). It's fun. The whole system is miles better than stock.

Reverse gear is unfixable but I'm used to it, I just tend to slip the clutch and disengage/feather as needed.

The transmission shifts very slowly and during normal driving you depress clutch, let off gas to make an up shift but the engine keeps revving for a few hundred RPM. If you're driving more aggressively then it'll go up even more. To me it just seems really unrefined and archaic. . .but then again the 6-speed manual is unrefined and archaic.

My brother has a 2000 Ram 2500 Cummins 4x4 5-speed manual. That transmission is all around smoother and shifts better than the Taco 6-speed . . And that's behind a big honkin diesel . That ain't right

Tune helps with the rev-hang, it shifts fine IMO as long as you don't rush it.
Reverse is certainly too tall for a truck and overdrive could be taller but there may be a technical reason due to how the transmission gears go together.

It's certainly far from the worst manual I've driven.

The same shit everyone else has.
I’ve been looking for an upgrade, I hate how much slop th OEM stuff has.

What specifically did you not like about it?

I made mine not do that by removing factory 100% rev hang and did the common mod of OTT tune that changed it to 50% rev hang.

I have stage 2 URD clutch kit and URD torque u heavyweight flywheel.
A FluidAmpr would help even more.

am a bit overgeared. 4.88 kind of helped. If I could go back and do it again I’d probably go 4.56 (RA60F).

4.56 would probably cruise better and off road fine. There is no replacement for a better low range ratio or second tcase, crawlbox, 2LO mod, etc

good quality gear oil and drive it how it wants to be driven.
It is a mechanical object to be adapted to.

or swap the drivetrain to something that’s a better engine and transmission that has replaceable TOB sleeve.

OTT can be set to 100% remove rev hang. Which I tried and did not like. It dropped RPM too much, too fast, and too low to time with appropriate shift speed.

It made shifting my truck very difficult, it was very notchy, no wiggle room between shifts. It was also a little more effort to shift. I don’t recommend it.
You’d be better off buying a new OEM seat, because I’m sure yours has 100K+ on it.

91,500 on mine. No complaints, but I don't tow. Reverse gear ratio is a bit much indeed, but I just love this truck. Redline MT-90 in trans and transfer, Redline 75w90 in the diffs. Life is good...

Ok well I notice the rev hang, thanks for the explanation, but never thought of it as a problem. Now I will be thinking about it all the time
