I verified before 1st start up in the am I get a hissing sound when removing the fuel cap. It’s an OEM replacement cap about 10 years old.

I’m gonna drive it this morning, I’ll verify vapor pressure at the fuel cap when I park.

So I hope for your sake its a simple breather/evap line thats clogged up. But if you rule all of those out, then the charcoal cannister or fuel tank vent valve will be the next most likely culprits causing this excessive pressure buildup. And the charcoal cannister is very pricey

The more I think about it, I think everything is pointing towards your charcoal cannister.

The workaround of filling the tank with the nozzle upside down to avoid the nozzle clicking off (from vapor backpressure) has likely been saturating the charcoal cannister with too much moisture (similar to the way overfilling the tank would).

Now the charcoal cannister is likely caked up and not letting the tank breath. And ultimately it may have been the fuel tank vent valve that started all the problems (that first caused you to have to fill up your tank that way).

Yea. Been pricing charcoal canisters. If needed I’ll go OEM. Damn more whiskey money possibly going to the taco

Nope, 2 different parts. The fuel tank vent valve part # is in that thread I linked above.

I can get you the charcoal cannister part number off of the box mine came in if you need it (I kept my old cannister in the new cannisters box in case it can be refurbished down the road perhaps)

Keep in mind my truck is an '03 V6/5Spd, so any part numbers should be verified to fit your truck if yours isn't the same spec truck.

I know ya'll discredited my suggestion to check for an exhaust leak, but I would do that before dropping the money on a new canister. Particularly the flanges between the exhaust manifold and cross over pipe, and the collector pipe... aka before the cats, where the excess fuel vapor gets burned off...

Agree with your suggestion to check for an exhaust leak, but at the same time, if OP has had clear and obvious problems with his fuel tank venting (as evidenced by having to fuel up the truck with the nozzle upside down) for quite some time, it stands to reason that smelling fuel whilst driving is likely to be a progression of that same issue.

Isn't the system suppose to be under some pressure? I always heard a slight amount of pressure being released on fill ups. Now I hear no pressure but gurgling when the cap is removed and the P0446 code. Replaced the charcoal canister but still hear the gurgling and gas smell. Guess the roller valve is next?

Be interested to know what a “roller valve” is! Can’t say I’ve ever heard of one!

Sure, some nominal amount of pressure is normal. That being said, smelling fuel while driving isn't normal. And not being able to pump enough gas to get to a full tank without it clicking off early isn't normal.

When I had this problem, (before replacing the fuel tank vent valve and charcoal cannister), if I were to open the gas cap after a drive, it would gush fuel vapors for the better part of a minute. And I could tell it was far more of a pressure release than I'd ever experienced before when removing any gas cap from any vehicle.

Ok my pressure was definitely not excessive and have never had an issue with filling the tank. New cannister already installed and new tank vent on the way. Hope this takes care of it.

What are you trying to fix again? If you dont have problems filling up why do you need a tank vent? Are you smelling fuel while driving?

Any news OP? Exhaust leaks, or tank over pressurizing still?

No gas smell when driving, only when exiting the truck around the tank area between the cab and the bed. Codes P0440,P0446. Checked VSV and vacuum lines under the hood, good. Gas cap, good. No pressure when removing gas cap and just a gurgling sound. I've overfilled the tank several times, figured charcoal canister so I replaced it. All vacuum lines look good and no evidence of a fuel leak. Cleared codes and still smell gas. Usually takes 3 days to throw codes and I'm on day 2, nothing so far. Figured only thing left is the tank vent. Never had any issues filling the tank like you've stated.
