I got a head gasket leak. How much can be safely shaved off these heads in case it’s warped? TY

None, according to the SM I have. "If warpage is greater than the maximum, replace the cylinder head."

    Maximum warpage:
    0.10 mm (0.0039 in.)

By resurfacing the heads and removing the distance between the camshafts and crankshaft you risk having VVTI issues.

Now have folks resurfaced theirs heads? Yes, I am one of them. Per the shop I went to, my heads were out .003". The shop took off .0035" from RH and .0034" from the LH. I have about 40k miles on my head gasket repair. I suppose in hindsight, mine were still within the allowable range.

Others suggest using thicker head gaskets, like Cometic, but I honestly don't know much about that.

Had a buddy who had the block decked. Because that was the actual issue. He had to make up difference with headgasket.

    This was on a 1grfe 4runner

Read up on issues after machining heads.

Head gaskets fail on these trucks but the heads rarely warp.

I haven't machined a cylinder head on a 1GR yet and have never had one leak after gasket replacement.

But milling the head seems to throw the timing off of these engines.

I am definitely hoping that this 2006’s heads aren’t warped? It hasn’t overheated as long as I’ve owned it as far as I know

They are as good as OEM.
But they don't make them in OEM thickness.

If you don't shave the head, go OEM.

    If you do, go Cometic.

Cometic is a highly reputable brand. As mentioned, if the cylinder head is shaved, a thicker head gasket is required to compensate for the material removed, which is why the Cometic gasket is designed with added thickness.

I have to take the heads into a machine shop to see if they are warped first… so I guess I buy the gaskets afterwards then right? TY

Or you just go get you a good straight edge and feeler gauges and check it yourself.

Don't buy anything until you know the condition of the heads
