Overland Torque Tune (OTT) by Overland Tailor

I had the lite/mild tune done one week before a road trip from Anaheim. A round trip to Zion, Bryce, and Grand Canyon going thru Las Vegas. The truck performed like a champ and I know with a stock configuration, there would be a lot of sections of this trip where I would've just been frustrated that my truck wouldn't be able to move like I want it to. It's such a great tune, and with a stock RWD, the MPG was satisfactory.

 

Do you have an active partner in central Maryland/SW of Baltimore area?

I would love to getting rid of the vibration that can happen between 35-47mph - do you think a tune would do so?

I just pulled the trigger on mild/medium tune at Buffalo Speed in Lancaster NY. Chris was my tech and he is awesome. It took about a half hour and I can't say enough about how much I love it. So far I am really liking medium. Much smoother driving experience with lots of power. If you are on the fence, do it. If you are in WNY call Chris.

 

I'm towing up very long hills here in CO and have gotten the 'Reduced power for Temp' message twice now, with the tune help or make that worse?

 

What even is that? Overheated battery and/or turbo?

 

from a little reading, seems that the newer taco's forego an external transmission cooler(?) I know on the Tundra's they stopped including them on 2019+. Even though the transmission itself has the ability to add one, and many options are out there to do so. I'd say go try and find an aftermarket external trans cooler to help with temps.

 

You're going to want to address why you're truck is overheating before considering tuning.

I highly doubt this is the case for your issue, but the connector that is responsible for delivering the signal from the ECU to the fan controller was unplugged from the factory on our 2024 TRD Off-Road shop truck. The vehicle was largely fine and did not exhibit any issues in the first 200 miles (even with the cooling fan completely inoperative due to the disconnected plug). Nothing looked out of the norm until the first dyno session, where the truck got 'warm' on the dyno, making pulls and ultimately getting the warning message you indicated in your post. It's the small, 2-pin connector located at the top of the radiator shroud on the passenger side that should be used to confirm yours is properly seated (again, ours was not).

Have you ensured the coolant is filled appropriately? Ours was a little low from the factory. Not enough to have any effect on temperatures however. Is your radiator/intercooler potentially clogged with dirt/mud? Are the grille shutters operating appropriately/opening? Any additional context you can give can prove helpful.

We've not observed any instances of the truck overheating, even when towing 6,000 lbs in the UT summer on slow mountain passes. Transmission temperatures are something we'd like to see addressed (and are working with companies to develop specific kits). Our calibration does help somewhat with the rising transmission temperature. A tune can only do so much here, but we've documented that the transmission can stay cooler and longer when tuned versus the stock calibration. It's essential to remember, though, that the calibration isn't meant to, nor is it designed to, replace a proper cooler setup.

 

Thanks for the reply, I have gone through and checked many of these things already but not the actual fan switch or grill shutters, need to figure out what I need to do to confirm they're working. The truck never overheated it just flashed that message and I took my foot out of it and it went away almost immediately. It happened in the same place both times on I-70, it's the 1st 10 miles up from E470 and a very steep grade with no let off. I plan to install a Trans cooler with fans, that should take care of it.

 

You ever go back to the dealer with the issue with your 4th Gen Tacoma, find out what they say? If dealer no help, do whatever.

 

Hi Justin - it's been awhile since I've been on here, just wondering if there's been any updated/new tunes for 3rd gen Tacoma's? I currently have the mild/medium (I think it's the v9 version) tune and while I like it, sometimes I feel it's just a little off on the shifting points and the lag is terrible when merging or trying to pass other vehicles on the highway. I don't have a Land cruiser, but what's the gains look like for them?

 

Net gain will be very similar to the Hybrid 4G Tacoma (seen below), but the overall output will be lower due to the AWD drivetrain and associated parasitic losses. We'll have an actual chart to share shortly.
