do you give people rides?

A passed out drunk person tried to get a ride from me

    I ran away.
    Have you ever done this?

20 bucks is 20 bucks in the tank for thirsty Truck.
But I do not want anyone throwing up in the cab.

Maybe they could roll around in the truckbed like cargo. If they throw up there it can be hosed out.
I saw they called an Uber. The Uber did not come. I mean they kind of did, turned around, and left. Not sure why.

At the end of the day, I did make a decision to disappear and did so.
Besides throw up, there are other potential risks.
For example, this person was passed out. Doesn't matter their friends ask for a ride.
You're picking up an unconscious person you don't know, and that can be misinterpreted as bad optics to the public.

I've never encountered someone pukey-drunk but I have definitely not given someone a ride because they were visibly filthy with unidentified stuff that looked like it would have soaked through my truck towel and contaminated my leather seat.

I'll stop for someone obviously making a shitty walk if I'm not in a hurry, but I also have no problem changing my mind if upon closer inspection they seem sketch or they start getting weird once we're driving.

The few times I've had someone start getting weird once we're underway they had no problem getting out when I told them it was time.

For every one person who tried to weasel for more than a ride or were obviously too sketch for me to let them in in the first place there are 20 or more people who are honestly just extremely thankful for the lift.

If I saw someone passed out on the street where I live (rural AF) I'd probably summon medical aid, because chances are it's not (just) booze.

No I'm not a bus, cab, uber, or a good samaritan. I doubt if I'd even find myself in a situation where someone is asked for a ride especially if they are drunk.

Unless I know the person they are not getting in my vehicle, and even then I'd have to think about it.

Before your time, but I noticed that things changed around the time of the Highway serial killer who was dropping bodies along 195 and 140 in the late 80s around the New Bedford, Mass area.

It was a different time back then.

Used to hitchhike a lot, late 60's, early 70's. Different world back then. Wasn't uncommon at all. Hell, I'd rather hoof it these days, no way. I'd pick 'em up later when I started driving. Only had to give one guy the boot, freak show.... Today nada chance!

The state took half my parents' property to build 195. So this crap was happening in my back yard, literally.
I went to HS in dartmouth in the 80s.

Honestly now that I think about it

the person in question could’ve slept it off, then walked home. Or Uber’d in the morning.

nothing wrong with a 12mi, 20mi, 30mi, 40mi foot movement. Some people do that 3x a week whether for training or health. Great way to start the day with a W and meditate.
Could even be a one time lesson.
There are water fountains to stay hydrated, water cups that are hard to get but obtainable, and locked bathrooms.

You got me there. I have no idea.

Met someone that says they check up on anyone and everybody passed out these days because of fentanyl.
IDK. There's fentanyl. Buying and consuming random shit from people cutting trying to make a profit that got who knows what from who knows where is probably not smart.
Never decided to pass out and expose my back to public. If I did, I'd find a hiding spot.

Shake somebody awake, they might fight. Keep walking and they will not.

I have Narcan. It was free. Never used it. Sits in the truck first aid kid.
Maybe they need medical. Or maybe it's a false alarm waste of EMS time.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's a CA thing.

Recently heard there's a non-gov drunk tank around here. Premise being LE takes person there to drop off.

Once upon a time I was driving through a flood. Because Toyota. The truck will get where it needs to go. It does not care if there's a flood.
Person is standing there staring at the flood, trying to walk across. Looks like shit so I say hey, you're not getting in the truck. But you can stand on the slider, hold onto the roof rack, to get across where it looks like you're trying to go. Two friends have already done that.
They say no, and then demand money. Apparently going out of my way to solve a flood crossing with an off road vehicle was not enough. I did not have cash. Nobody does, it's the 21st century. Not that it would change anything if I did. They said that's fine, pulled out a smartphone with payment app, and said they take card. Mind blown. Kept driving.

I might have to add a packet of job applications to my truck EDC for those cases.
Reminds me of the time I made minimum wage doing an easy job. We always had a hiring sign. They'd hire anybody. Anybody could do it.
But for some reason, guy outside with a cardboard sign would just stand there all day, in front of the hiring sign. Same job that got me this truck and apartment from nothing.
All the while we're understaffed every day, enjoying manning a department that takes 2 or 3 people with 1 person.
Man could've solved both problems. Money in his pocket, fill the role, etc. but nope. I'm sure he had a reason beyond my primitive level of understanding.

I guess it's still pretty quiet around SMU.
I took some college classes there during HS at Stang and college summer breaks. Ugliest goddamn campus ever.

Even if I was in Marion or Mattapoisett, I wouldn't pick up some rando on the side of the road in 2025. Lol.
