2021 Tacoma Accessory Bracket Under Hood

I recently purchased a 2021 Tacoma TRD off-road and realized that there seems to be an extra accessory bracket under the hood on the passenger side behind the air filter.

I looked into this and found that some people have mounted aftermarket on-board air compressors via brackets such as this one:

I have a few questions about this:

- Why does this bracket exist in the first place?
- What is (in your opinion) the best bracket for mounting an on-board compressor?
- What other accessories have people installed in that spot?
- The truck is located in California - are there any smog devices installed near that location that would interfere with installation? I read somewhere that this could be the case but can't find anything mounted there in the way so I assume I am good.

Here is a picture of the bracket - it is located right above the passenger side wheel well behind (towards the passenger from) the air intake filter.

which makes it seem like there should be an ABS system installed on that bracket. Could someone explain why it is not present on that bracket on my 2021 Tacoma?

 

^You either have a Third World-spec truck without ABS, or a TRD Off Road with an electric brake booster where the ABS valves are integrated with the master cylinder on the driver's side.

 

OP, do you have a manual? This is where I have my on board air compressor in my 22 TRD OR 6MT. Your picture appears stock to me and I do not see an "additional" bracket; although I'd have to examine mine after work to assist further and it's not an area I'm always looking at so my memory shouldn't be relied upon haha

Did some of the TRD off-road models come with the standard ABS brake system? Mine definitely seems to have this electric brake booster system.

 

Seeing as this entire mounting bracket and space is free in my truck, what have other people thought to put there? I see brackets like this for sale:

But I don't really understand the point - are you just wiring a second battery in parallel? Won't this double the amount of current the battery provides (while maintaining the same voltage) which could damage things in the vehicle?

All 3rd gen TRD OR came with the electric booster. That's how the electronic traction aids (crawl control, MTS, A-Trac on manual transmission models) are achieved.

My plan is to make a bracket to mount an ammo can or two there to use as tool boxes. Personally prefer to keep my air compressor in a cooler spot than the engine compartment.

 

That is an excellent idea!

 

You can put a battery there, an air compressor, route a cowl pick up from the air box (i.e. a hidden snorkel), a tool box, etc.

Correct, same voltage. Current draw is determined by the load. A fridge that draws 2A with one battery will still draw 2A with two batteries.

 

That looks pretty great - I'd be interested in setting something like this up.

How difficult was it to wire up the compressor? Do you have to wire it to a switch internally somehow, or do you just have it on a switch right by the compressor under the hood?

And then make an adaptor plate to mount it to the mounting point under the hood.
